It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our wonderful father, grandfather and great grandfather (Poppa) who passed peacefully into the sunset surrounded by his loving family. Predeceased by his beautiful wife and love of his life Jane, his son Daryl, sister Thelma Waddell and brother Walter and many very good friends. Survived by his loving daughter Dawn Jones, granddaughters Naomi (Nick) Poeschek, Chelsea Wakelyn (Kris), Jessica (Dallas) Steeves and grandson Brett (Melissa) Wakelyn. Six great grandchildren that he adored Ava, Aaron, Matthew, Amelia, Eli and Audrey and much to his pleasure a seventh on the way and many nieces and nephews.

Don was born in Calgary and his family relocated to Victoria in 1938. He was a veteran, joining the Royal Canadian Navy in April 1943 and serving until March 30, 1946. He then worked in the Victoria Public Health Agency, first as a Public Health Inspector taking water samples from the beaches along Beach Drive, as well as doing health and sanitation inspections of many restaurants and Northwestern Creameries. The agency was taken over by the Capital Regional District in the 1970s and he became the Director before his retirement in 1983.

He was inducted into the Victoria Sports Hall of Fame in 2004 for his contributions as co-founder of the Gorge Soccer Association and National Little League Baseball organization, as an announcer and time keeper for hockey and Victoria Shamrock games at the Memorial Arena for many years, plus as a devoted volunteer to community sports in Victoria, for which he is known and remembered by many to this day. He was an active member of the Gorge Oldtimers and enjoyed his Friday lunches with the guys for many years. He was also an active member of the Saturday Morning Hot Stove League, another group of friends that he enjoyed having coffee with for most of his life.

Don was also a long time member of St. Andrew’s Lodge #49 and was the Grand Master of British Columbia and the Yukon in 1986-1987, a 33rd degree Scottish Right Mason, and a member of the Royal Order of Scotland.

Don moved to Highgate Lodge in September 2007 and considered the residents and staff to be his second family. Thank you to Linda Bishop, Bill and Sarge among many who made his life there very special. Also the family would like to thank the nurses on the eighth floor of Royal Jubilee Hospital for the exceptional and compassionate care of Don in his last days as well as their support shown to his family during this difficult time. Special thanks to Dr. Egan for many years of exceptional care and compassion shown to all the family.

Flowers gratefully declined, but contributions to Cystic Fibrosis Canada in honour of his beautiful great granddaughter Amelia or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Condolences can be made to the family below.

  • Don & Trudie Campbell

To Dawn Jones and the Wakelyn Families.
We were saddened to learn of Don’s passing.
He played a significant role in our lives, as a friend and mentor.
One of his last comments was. “The Mann Cup belongs here.”
The team obliged him and did just that, on Friday Sept, 11th.
They did it in “Wakie” style with talent zeal and determination.
The Shamrock organization honoured his memory at game 4.
3000 fans, players and management led by Cliff Laquane held a moments silence,
in tribute of Don’s untiring support and contributions to Victoria’s Sporting community.
His positive leadership in the wide Masonic community will be greatly missed,
which he led by example with his keen sense of compassion and humour.
We personally liked his attitude toward Mission Statements, which he declared, as useless if the desire to succeed and win did not begin in ones heart.
Our community has lost another jewel from Victoria’s Sports Crown of the past.
    With fraternal love
Don and Trudie Campbell and Families.
