Sadly we announce the sudden passing of our father. Born in Edmonton Alberta, raised by his Aunt Kay in Victoria BC. Predeceased by his parents, Carl and Edna; sister, Dorothy(Babe); first wife, Loretta; youngest son, Gregory(Alan). He leaves his loving second wife, Verna of 44 years; stepson, Daniel; his children, Ken, Donna, Vickie; 9 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren,(another on the way); sister Linda(Bob) Anderson; cousin, Bill(Mary) Booth. Dad loved hunting, fishing, flying, woodworking, building, racing, tinkering with cars and was a man of many talents. He designed, built and raced his own hydroplane (Fury) in the late 50’s, and early 60’s, competing in races all over Vancouver Island and the mainland, Elk Lake in Victoria, Westwood Lake in Nanaimo, Sprout Lake in Port Alberni and Hatzik Lake in Mission BC and Washington. He designed, built and flew model airplanes and won a builders award for a very unique coffee table. Dad also delivered sawdust and later worked for BC Forest Products, then partnered with his cousin in the mid 60’s to design and build houses until the late 80’s. After retiring from building, still continued to do many woodworking projects for himself and others. Being a perfectionist, when Dad was focused on a project, he would sit down at his desk, design and draft plans and kept them at his side until the project was completed. There was no room for error. It had to be perfect or it was done over and over again until it was. He loved a challenge and kept himself busy. Respected and admired, Dad, you will be greatly missed by your family and especially your grandchildren for your comedic sense of humour.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 26 at McCall’s Downtown, Johnson & Vancouver Streets. In lieu of flowers donating to a food bank would be greatly appreciated.

  • Tom Jepp

It is with sadness and a heavy heart that I write my condolences to you Verna and your family. Don was like an uncle to me and I have a few fond memories to share with you. I remember many years ago my dad, Tom, talking about the time the two of them took the train to Edmonton to attend Carl’s and Edna’s funeral. The two of them must have built a strong bond because they would always relive their train experiences. For me, my memories are seeing Don sitting in Aunt Kay’s kitchen or Don reading his Reader’s Digest which he loved to read or Don helping me complete a high school woodworking project.
Wishing you Verna and your family the best during this difficult time and remember that Don will always be in my prayers.
