January 9, 1934 – April 19, 2014

Diane passed away on April 19, 2014, from advanced breast cancer. She was predeceased by her youngest daughter Michelle in 2003, husband Raymond in 2008, and her first daughter-in-law Bonnie in 2007.

Diane is survived by her children Doug (Susan) and Cheryl (Andrea). Diane’s abundant love and quick, sly smile will be greatly missed by her family and many close friends.

After raising her children, Diane pursued a rewarding career in real estate working thoughtfully to help many people find a place to call home.

Diane aka “Crafty” enjoyed many summers at Camp Pringle on Shawnigan Lake in her many roles as craft coordinator, camp counsellor, director and friend.

One of Diane’s greatest loves and achievements was her many, many years as a member of the Victoria Operatic Society (VOS).  Beginning in the 1970’s as the coffee mistress in the green room, “Ma Murton” as she was fondly called, worked her way through all the backstage roles including props, stagehand, sets, lighting, stage management, producer, to name only a few. While at VOS, Diane took on the role of mentor with ease and grew a community of life-long friends.  Diane’s outstanding contribution and dedication to VOS is commemorated each year with the “Murty” award.

In addition to her theatre activities, Diane volunteered with many other agencies including various churches, Habitat for Humanity and the Frederic Ozanam Centre. She also loved gardening, the annual spring flower shopping trip being one highlight of her year.

Family, friends and colleagues are invited to a Memorial Celebration for Diane to be held on May 31, 2014 at 1 pm at the Forge Church, 2612 Sooke Road, Langford.

In lieu of flowers, you are invited to make a donation to the organization of your choice, one that reflects Diane’s spirit.

  • Donna French (Heighed)

My deepest condolences to the family on this very sad news. I met Diane in the 70’s when we both were active With V.O.S. I have so many happy memories of the times we spent together working in theatre. Many years later, when I returned home for a visit I shared some thoughts with her about what she meant to me. She taught me to always respect everyone involved in a production, no matter what their contribution was. She taught me these things, not by words, but by the way she conducted herself. I respected her so much, and will miss that wonderful chuckle of hers. Godspeed, Diane.

  • Joanne (Jones) Huston

So sad to hear of Diane’s death via a friend in Victoria. I worked with her for many years with the VOS and always thought of her as an amazing worker/support and friend.
I live on the mainland — will try to attend her memorial.

Last saw her and connected at the Honorary members tea last year.

    Regards, Joanne

  • Niccistein and Nicola

  • Jim Allan

Remembering all the good memories I have of Diane (Mrs. Murton) and family during the 1960’s and early 70’s when we were both living on Gosper Crescent. From her much appreciated advice, to our long walks around Esquimalt and her introducing me to the VOS, I will always treasure the time we had together. My thoughts and prayers are with Doug, Cheryl and spouses. “May you find strength in the love of family and in the warm embrace of friends”.

  • Heather Day Jeliazkov

Deepest condolences to you all. I met Diane when I joined VOS in 1978 and she quickly became a mentor and friend. I have no doubt that “Ma” will continue to watch us all from the wings.

  • Judy Treloar

My thoughts are with you all. I loved Diane Murton, and we spent many hours together in the theatre, at parties, and in the pub after rehearsals. I know she has already talked to Gracie! The three of us had such good times together.
