It is with immeasurable sadness that we announce the sudden and tragic passing of Dr. Dennis Morgan on January 8, 2015. The eldest of six children, he was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland on September 10, 1956. After graduating medical school and training as a cardiologist, he settled in Victoria, British Columbia with his wife Cheryl, where they raised four beautiful children.

Dennis was predeceased by his mother Susanna, his father Harold and his brother Elvis. He leaves to mourn his wife of 34 years Cheryl (Smith), daughters Kristy (Harrison Wolfe), Erin (Chris Manson), Natalie (Stephen Hextall), and son Brendan (Chelsea McMenamie), as well as grandsons Kane and Maverick Wolfe. In Newfoundland, his surviving siblings are Harold (Cindy), Roxanne (Larry), Suzanne and Kim (Marcel).

A long time member of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, he loved being near the ocean and spending time with his family in Lake Cowichan, where he fostered his love of boating and fishing.

There will be a public memorial service for Dennis at Christ Church Cathedral on Saturday, January 17th, 2015 at 12 o’clock noon, followed by a celebration of life at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club for family and friends. Light refreshments will be served. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Canadian Mental Health Association or, locally, Our Place Society.

He will be dearly missed by friends and family from around the world, particularly those in Victoria and St. John’s.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

    Cheryl,

Only today did I become aware of Dennis’s passing. I have been reminiscing with my wife of the great times that we had together. She is sorry that she had not had the chance to meet such a wonderful friend.

Thoughts and Prayers are with you and your family.

Dear Cheryl and family: I am so sorry for your loss. I have fond memories of Dennis and our times together in medical school. Although I did not stay in touch I viewed Dennis as a life long friend. When I think back to medical school Dennis will be in my thoughts.

I was terribly saddened to hear of Dennis’s death. Ihas known him since Med School days at MUN [Class of ’79]. He was my clerk when I was a resident. We had managed to continue to cross paths intermittently over the year; most recently at a Medical Education Course in Napa Valley.
To describe him as bright is an understatement. His sense of humour was sharp but subtle. He was a solid doc and a great human being. We would meet at some event or other after not having seen easch other for 4 or 5 years and within minutes of filling in the gaps we were planning our social calendar for the next few days.
    I will miss that.

It was such a shock to learn the news regarding Dr. Morgan. He was my cardiologist for over 20 years and I always looked forward to my visits. He was so personable and made me feel comfortable and confident that I was being taken care of – always a smile, a joke, interested in me as a person not just a patient. My heart goes out to his family. Such a great loss to all those who knew him.

  • Conor and Carolyn Maguire

    Dear Cheryl and family,
We are deeply saddened by the tragic news of Dennis’ passing. No words can console your loss. We always felt warmth and kindness in his presence. We were blessed to have such great friends in Med school. We remember how thrilled we were meeting you guys in Kingston that summer. Our memories of Dennis will always be dominated by his sincere smile.
    Love and prayers,
    Conor and Carolyn Maguire

  • John and Julie Barrand

    Dear Mrs. Morgan and Family,

Please accept our sincere condolences at the loss or your husband and father. My wife and I have you in our thoughts these days and share your sorrow.

Dennis was my cardiologist for 23 years. He took over my case when I was very sick and needed much help. Dennis diagnosed my condition, treated the heart ailments and prolonged my life by many years. All we can hope for in this life is that we touch people in a positive way, that we make their lives better. Dennis sure did this for me, I know my son Robert, who sailed with Dennis, has very fond memories of him. From the celebration of life, Dennis inspired his family and friends very much. May he rest in peace and may you and your family find strength together.

    John and Julie Barrand

    Cheryl and Family,

I am shocked and saddened by the tragic news of Dennis’ passing. My family and I have warm memories of times spent with Dennis, Cheryl, and their children in Seattle, Bellevue, and Victoria. A loss for so many people. Dr. Morgan was my father’s cardiologist and gave our family a lot of comfort and reassurance during a very scary time in our lives. I was so thankful that my Dad was in good hands with Dr. Morgan, and am very sad to hear of his passing. My thoughts are with his family.

  • Leda Townshend

    Dear Cheryl and Family,
Words cannot come close to expressing the loss of Dennis to all who knew him. He was a bright light, a fun guy to be around and had the knack of making everyone feel like they were a special friend and shared an inside joke. I will always remember him as a smiling, happy person. Do know that you and your family can seek solace in all your friends and family, near and far.

  • Madeline Connors

    Dear Cheryl,

I was so sorry to hear about Dennis’s passing from my mom last weekend.

I have such fond memories of our time together in Kingston, when you made me part of your family life, and made the loneliness a lot less for a girl away from home for the first time.

Please accept my deepest sympathies to you and your Family. He will be very much missed.

  • David and Lynn Ross

We, like you, are trying to recover from shock and a sense of loss in the sudden passing of Dennis. He was my cardiologist for 23 years and guided our family through two open heart surgeries. One in 1991 and a very serious one just this last year. His advice and explanations were always clear and supportive over the years.
We also have lost a true friend and medical adviser. He will be missed by myself, wife and family but never forgotten.
Our sincerest condolences and comfort to you all, David and Lynn Ross.
As David’s wife I would like to add that Dennis made the really scary stuff alot more manageable. His caring and honest manner was so appreciated. Not all specialists or doctors for that matter are like that. I am just so sorry for your loss, he was a wonderful man. Lynn

  • Linda Reid and Stephen Roome

So saddened to hear of Dennis’ passing. Our deepest and heartfelt sympathy to all his family and friends. We as well as our patients greatly appreciated his kindness and care.

I was a patient of Dr. Morgan. I found him to be the most caring; interested in his patient’s well being and a very compassionate Dr. I moved to Victoria from Toronto years ago and have gone to other doctors here in Victoria, but nobody could compare to Dr. Morgan . My condolences to his family. May his memory be a blessing to you. I will certainly miss him.
    Ruth Bloomfield

  • John Andonov

    To the entire Morgan family
I had only been a patient of Dr. Morgan’s for 2 years but had come to know and respect him not only as my cardiologist but as a man who shared my love of fishing and boating. I was deeply saddened by the news of his passing.
    My sincere condolences.

To the family—Please know that we were so fortunate that Dennis touched our lives. We will always thank God he was blessed with hands that could heal and that he made a difference. A lot of people come and go and they live long lives and don’t. Our sincere condolences.

  • Janet Renouf

Dear Cheryl, thinking of you and your family a lot. And of Dennis – in the Chart Room remembering my Newfoundland roots when that David Blackwood came up for auction and then so generously saying he would not bid against me if I wanted it and sharing how to bid on-line, all replays in my mind when I see any David Blackwood.

  • Dr. Chuck Lefkowitz

Dennis and I (and Gord Moe) were cardiology residents together in the Queen’s program way back in 1983-1984. We shared a lot of laughs and good times. Dennis, you knew how to tell a joke and saw the humour in life. I always enjoyed the few times, we’ve connected since then. Enjoyed skiing with you and your son Brendan at Whistler a few years ago. You’ll be missed by all who ever knew you.
Condolences to Cheryl and the kids.

  • Matt Evans

My heartfelt condolences. I will truly miss our east coast chats and his patience with my cardiology questions. Truly one in a billion.

  • Carl and Edwina Hiscock

So sorry to hear about Dennis. We had such fun times together growing up. I am sure we will both cherish the memories we have of him. Keeping you all in our thoughts and prayers.

  • James Murtagh

To Dennis’ family, near and far, my very deepest condolences.

Dennis was my cardiologist for the past 17-years. The first time I met him he commented that we were of similar age and proceeded to tell me I should call him Dennis. My first impression was that he was a personable guy but I did not read much more than that into our interaction. Some months later, long after most busy physicians would have forgotten an initial consult, I met Dennis downtown and, to my great surprise, he called me by name. At that moment I knew Dennis was more than merely personable. Over time it became abundantly clear that Dennis was a gifted man pursuing a calling in a manner that few achieve.

I saw Dennis once or twice a year and I think we spent as much time talking about matters non-cardiac as cardiac. I learned that we both hailed from the east cost (different Islands), had both lost our accents (the loss of his being more surprising than the loss of mine); I heard about his hobbies, some of his medical frustrations and, frequently about his family. Family was a particularly consistent theme and his affection for and pride in his family was almost palpable. When I first became a parent Dennis repeatedly told me it would be the best thing that would ever happen to me. It was clear that his conviction was rooted in his own family.

In reflecting on my interaction with Dennis I was a little shocked to realize that I probably have spent a maximum of 6-10 hours with Dennis. It may be presumptuous to characterize someone with whom one has spent so little time a friend but the only apt description for my relationship with Dennis is to say I always felt I was in the care of a friend.

For his family…I pray fervently that you will soon find solace in your memories of Dennis and that those memories will not in any way be overshadowed by the unanswerable questions which sometimes accompany death.

Dennis was a gift for a lot of people…eternal rest grant unto him O’Lord and may perpetual light shine upon him.

  • Joanne seaward

I knew Dennis growing up..He was different.
I knew he’d go far and he did.My heartfelt condolences to Cheryl and the family..

  • Sabina Pettitt

My family and I cannot begin to tell you how much we appreciated and respected Dr. Morgan. He had a twinkle in his bright blue eyes, a caring and respectful manner with my mother and infinite patience with her physical challenges. He was a brilliant chemist who knew exactly how to balance all the meds she needs to take for her congestive heart failure. And most of all he took the time to listen to her. The last time we saw him my mother thanked him for keeping her alive and we all had tears in our eyes.
What a great loss to our health community in Victoria!!!
To you, his family, we offer our deepest sympathy.

    Many Blessings

Sabina Pettitt for Lilian Davies and Family

  • Anne Webster

I met Dennis many years ago when he was an internal medicine resident and I was an intern assigned to the “Cardiology A” (as opposed to the other service, “Cardiology B”) at Kingston General Hospital. This service was notorious amongst the house staff as being the most demanding, stressful, and therefore the most dreaded, of any service at the medical school. Yet it was a very successful rotation for me and it became the highlight of that year, in large part because of Dennis. Despite my inexperience as such a junior trainee, because of a one in three call schedule, I had to be the third “resident” with the daunting job of being in charge of cardiology, CCU and the code team every third night. Dennis ‘ confidence in me and his encouragement helped me thrive rather than just survive that experience. We moved on to different places and specialties, then crossed paths again when we each landed in Victoria. As we met in the halls of RJH in the course of our work, his smile and “Hi Anne” took me back to those magical days and gave me a boost of confidence even so many years later. Victoria was lucky to have him and I was privileged to have known him. Somehow the hospital seems a little less friendly now. Condolences to the family.

Dr. Morgan has been my cardiologist for over 10 years. For these 10 years, I have not worried much about my heart condition, largely in part due to Dr. Morgan’s benevolent treatment of me. Every time I saw him, I experienced that he was truly invested in my well-being and I knew he would champion my cause. Through various issues, he was a calm and reassuring presence. I am eternally grateful for the care he bestowed upon me.

I really don’t know what to make of this. Feels like a bad dream. We were so lucky to have shared dinner with Dennis & Cheryl along with Derek Saunders this past spring in Victoria, reminiscing about the good old days of innocence and spontaneity, primarily revolving around parties, pool and memorable May 24th weekends. It was great to see Dennis and Cheryl and hear of the Morgan clan.

  • Peter Shapter

My sincere condolences to all Dennis’s family and mourners. Intelligent, a great athlete with a powerful work ethic. Any who met him would be impressed. The “open house” he and Cheryl had @ Worsley Park in 2005 for their 25th anniversary showed real class. All were welcomed as at least old friends. I think he interned briefly with my father in Gander. Doctors! They are so complicated they are difficult to mourn for. Trying to understand my late father somehow keeps him alive in my mind even as he is now forgotten by many. Only the good die young, whatever their age…. for they are forever young.

  • Barb Zielinski RN

I worked in Jubilee Emergency with Dr. Morgan, a calm, gentle and bright man. Shocked and saddened and will certainly not forget him. My heart goes out to you all.

My sincere condolences on the loss of your husband and father. He is a loss to the community and his patients as well. I only knew him as my cardiologist but he demonstrated such great care, respect and compassion that I always left his office feeling valued and comforted. He spoke with great pride and love of his wife and children. I was impressed that he was a man who actually knew when his anniversary was. He was a remarkable man and I shall miss him.

Dr. Morgan was my mother’s cardiologist and both her and I would like to offer our condolences on his passing to his family. He was a rare individual in his profession — not just incredibly knowledgeable and thorough in his care of patients, but also able to put them at ease, share humorous stories, and explain complex medical ideas in a way that was understandable and comforting to people who were worried and scared about their health. We consider ourselves privileged to have been under his care and know that many, many other of his patients feel the same. He will be greatly missed and I hope the family can eventually find comfort in knowing how many people’s lives were improved and saved by his skill and his sense of caring.

I remember Doctor Morgan for his sense of humor, his empathy and sympathy towards myself and Ted my husband who had dementia and total loss of hearing made medical interventions difficult. Always a smile, and extended hand and sometimes a delightful response to my and Teds’ cheekiness. He was honest, forthright, and warm.
Sincerely, Arlene, (Ted passed) but I can still hear my dear one say…Hey, when do we get to visit Dennis?

  • Tom and Betsy Swanson

God rest his sole. May he rest now that he’s found his great reward. Our hearts join yours in sympathy and mourning for the man Dennis Morgan. We’ll help in the healing process for his loved ones.

  • Lorraine Scott

What a sad and tragic loss both personally and professionally.! I was a patient of Dr. Morgan and was deeply impressed by both his ability as a doctor and at the personal way that he transmitted his knowledge and expertise.

A great loss to his family, friends and co-workers, but certainly also, though on a different level, to his patients .

    My condolences to all!

    Lorraine Scott

  • Don & Janet Smith

Dear Cheryl, Kristy, Erin , Brendon & Natalie
Our hearts are breaking for you as you try to deal with Dennis’s passing.
The loss of a husband, father, grandfather and friend is a tragedy indeed.
Dennis was quite a guy. From sealskin bow ties and lampshades, to serious conversations about his research: from skilled hands saving lives, to his ability to teach that skill to others; we will never truly know how many lives he has touched.
Take comfort from the assurance that Dennis will always live in the memory of those who knew him, and his smile will linger in our hearts forever.
We do not have to hold our loved ones in our arms, to hold them in our hearts. Our love surrounds you always: especially at this difficult time.
    All our love, always.
Don, Janet, Jason , Jeremy and families

  • Richard Ackrill

Cheryl, Wendy and I are still reeling from the news about Denis. Our thoughts and love are with you and the family.
I know that Denis and Mike are retelling the story about the Long Distance race that we dropped out of and sailed to Sidney with a full main in winds over 50! It culminated with a “chicken jibe” with Mike at the helm and us all at the back of the bus. Maybe Denis is telling Mike about the time he won the CFSA regatta or the one about the time the main halyard went up the mast just before the start of Swiftsure and then we continued to Port Tack the fleet and win the start. Denis has lots of stories to share in Heaven.
    God bless you All!

Cheryl, thinking of you and your family during this difficult time. In 2012 when I was going through breast cancer, Dennis took time out of his busy schedule on a visit home to come and spend a few hours with me. It really meant the world to me that he would do that and even though distance has kept us from seeing each other often, we have had occasions to get together on your visits home. That will be a special memory I will hold dear. Sending you love and prayers and hoping you hold onto all the great memories you created over the years.
