February 21, 1950 – June 20, 2015

Dan was born and raised in Calgary, where he met and married his high school sweetheart and best friend, Shannon in 1970.  They have been blessed with two wonderful children, Jenny and Jim, son-in-law, Stuart Leckie and two beautiful grandchildren, Sadie and Rory.  He leaves behind his dear sisters, Janeen Van Orman and Elizabeth Goertz and his close cousin Rick Thorpe.  After graduating from the U of C as a chemical engineer, he went on to have a long and rewarding career in the oil and gas industry, the majority of which he spent self-employed.  During his career and life, Dan made many long and enduring friendships.  Their unerring support and the support of his extended family this past while meant a great deal to him and his family.  Dan was a humble man of few personal wants, a man who appreciated and was grateful for each and every day and a man who considered himself lucky his entire life.  We will miss his smile.

At his personal request, there will be no formal funeral service.  A small, private family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

Shannon I just received a phone call from my pal Cliff Hendrickson who I played hockey with and Rod coached.
Needless to say I am in shock……..can’t imagine……
It is like yesterday that he and I were butting heads (in our woodwards plastic football helmets),
on the front lawn of mayfair rd…………….he always was kicking my ass. My house was his house and his house was my house, if one family could not find the other it was auto that we would be at the others house. If I am in the loop i think that Ruth may be still alive and if so pls give her our condolences……………to out live our children is the wrong order.
I trust that we will be able to touch base and talk in the near future…..not sure that you will have a email address with this note..
you and your family will be in our prayers.
    Bobby

We cannot imagine how difficult it is for you, having lost a husband, father and grandfather. I (Roger) have a huge void in my life, with the loss of my best friend. I will never forget all the great times we had together.
Dan was one of the really great guys, (there are not many left), someone whose friendship I cherished, and it is an honor to be known as one of his closest buds.
Shannon, be assured that we are ready and able to help you out with anything you need. Please do not hesitate to call anytime.
    Love

I have been fortunate to have Dan as a friend for many years. As you know we invested together in the oil and gas business by drilling wells ( that was a long time ago), buying undeveloped land from time to time; enjoyed participating in the hockey pool for over 30 years, and having lunch together once in a while (Dan had his favorite hole-in-the wall spots). One of his more recent favorites was a Hungarian restaurant ( I think it recently closed), which was always entertaining both food and people wise. I will miss him but remember many good times. He truly was a good person. Laurie Smith

  • Gail, Al, Joe & Jack Karpyshyn

Allan and myself (Gail) thought a lot of of Dan & knew what kind of a man Dan was. Words that we feel describe Dan best would be; Hard working, family oriented, intelligent, personable, funny, charismatic, loving, interesting, knowledgeable, kind hearted, loving husband, Father & Grandfather to name a few. It was an honour and a privilege to be his friend & we will personally cherish the short time we had to spend with him on this earth. Until we meet again Dan. We will always remember your Kung Fu story with tears of laughter & remember your beautiful big smile & robust laugh. You made us smile & we will never forget that. We will have a stiff drink & toast the incredible legacy you left with gratitude for all the people you touched & who loved you. Many thanks Dan, you left us too soon but you lived a full & beautiful life & we will never ever forget you!!

  • Teri Dobie Randy Dueck

Shannon, Jenny, Jim, I do not know a better man than Dan.
He helped me out many times in the 30 years I have known him.
Randy and I talk many times about the advice he gave us, the love he has for Shannon. We often reminisce about the stories he told like the times Shannon and Dan would share a cup of coffee at the junior hockey games.
There is a special place in Heaven for Dan.
    Teri and Randy
