Passed away at home, as was her wish, on September 30, 2014. Fiercely independent and feisty to the end, Hilda will be missed greatly for her caring and generous nature, her determination and her wonderfully dry sense of humour. Born in Birkenhead, England on February 21,1920, Hilly served as a WAAF in WWII and in 1948 came to visit her sister Freddy in Vancouver. Here she met the love of her life, Bill and decided to stay. They shared many happy years together in Winnipeg and Vancouver before enjoying their retirement in Victoria.

Predeceased by her husband, William (Bill) Shankland; nephews, Lawrie Bennett and Geoff Dudley; siblings, Freddy, Jay and Chas, she will be fondly remembered by family, Chris and Nancy Bennett, Paula Bennett, Charles Bridden, Kristine Maddox (Mick), Andrea Dudley, great nephews and niece, Jordan, Christopher, Sheena, Cass and Daniel and good friend, Mary Hemsworth.

Our sincere thanks to the wonderful caregivers and staff at Home Instead who provided warm and caring support over the past four years.

A tea in celebration of her life will be held at her house on Thursday, October 30th from 4 pm – 6 pm.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences on the passing of Hilda. She was a positive influence in my life. The interest she took in my family and especially her support during my son’s illness and ongoing recovery were very much appreciated.

    Dear loved ones of Hilda,
I knew Hilda for a very short time near the end of her life as one of her care givers . I always felt that I was in the company of a very fine person. We had many great games of cards together and some good laughs. It was a pleasure to have known her.
    Kindest Regards and my condolences,
    Susan McGillivray
