May 20, 1937 – February 3, 2015

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Chesley George Power on February 3, 2015.  Dad is survived by his loving family; his wife of 55 years, Helen and his six children; Ben, Jennifer (Bill), Rosanne (Dave), Fred, Angela and Carolyn (Max).  He was a loving grandfather to Kristopher, Marissa, Darroch, Michaela, Marcus, Joshua, Wesley and Dylan.  He is also survived by his two sisters, Maureen (Jack) Tucker and Sharon (John) Payne. Chess was born in Victoria to an old Victoria family and he lived most of his life here.  His first job was delivering the Colonist newspaper.  He went on to train as an RCMP officer in Regina where he graduated first in his class.  He met his wife Helen when he was serving in Tofino, B.C.  Chess and Helen were married in Victoria on May 11, 1959.  After he left the RCMP, he studied to be a Certified General Accountant and he worked in the forest industry and then with the Ministry of Finance for many years prior to his retirement. Among his many attributes, his family will miss his sense of humour, humility and quiet strength.

A Funeral Service will be held at McCall’s Downtown, Johnson & Vancouver Streets at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 6, 2015 with a reception in McCall’s Family Centre followed by interment at Hatley Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations if desired would be appreciated to the Parkinson Society British Columbia.  Condolences may be offered to the family below.

Sorry to hear about the sudden departure of Chess – a very dear brother-in-law!! I send you my heartfelt sympathy!
All the visits I’ve made to B.C. and spend time with your family – are treasured and cherished!! I feel truly blessed to have had a taste of Chess and his quiet, quick, witty comments, – that brought so much life to those that were around him. He knew how to bring out the best of others!! I am sad to hear of the passing of your grandfather, father, husband and brother. I have heard many nice things about Mr. Power and also the challenges he faced during his final years. He was a strong man and blessed to have such a large family to comfort each other during this time. My thoughts are with you.

  • Niel (Christopher) and Ursula Pearce

I just found out today of your loss. My Dad and I offer you all our heartfelt condolences. As I know what it is like to lose a parent before their time. Think of the wonderful times that you all had together. Big hugs to Angela and Jennifer. You have a wonderful family. I can remember the time that there was a house warming party at Angela’s house near the Luxton Fair Grounds and your Dad was making us laugh. Take care of yourselves. Love Niel (Christopher) and Ursula Pearce.

Pat and I have just returned from two weeks in Hawaii and were surprised to hear the news of Chess from Colin’s phone message. Chess joined us in the BC Logging Tax early in the 1970’s and was always a quiet diligent worker with his own unique sense of humour. His CGA training and forestry experience gave him a good insight into the job at hand. We worked together in the same department until 1997 when we both retired. It is unfortunate we were away for his funeral. You can be assured his memory will not be forgotten. Our condolences to the whole family. Peter and Pat.

Although Chess and I never kept in contact over the years, he and I were classmates at St. Louis college…class of 1955.
Truly sorry to learn of his passing and my prayers and those of all his former classmates (although few in number) will be said in his memory.

I didn’t know him much as he kept to himself whenever I was over but he must have done something right because all of his children turned out right and are so good to be around. Great job and God Bless, Teresa

  • Dr. Parbeen Pathak and Staff

Dr. Pathak has requested that I send his condolences. We were shocked and saddened to hear of the news. Although he struggled with his Parkinson’s disease, Mr. Power always had a smile on his face and loved to share his stories with myself and the staff. His wonderful attitude about life, really did shine through. He will be sadly missed by all. So Sorry to hear. Best wishes to all who loved him. Diana for the office of Dr. Parbeen Pathak

    To the Power Family,

Your family has been a part of my life for 32 years, always warm and welcoming. Your dad was no small part of that feeling of belonging that was second nature at your house. I have countless memories of his quiet quick wit that always made me laugh out loud (and if you weren’t paying attention, you’d miss it! 🙂 ) and his gentle nature that made me feel like one of the family. What you have said about him is so true -he was a rare gem of humility and quiet strength and I feel truly blessed to have known him.

With all my love and prayers,
    God Bless,
    Karen xo

I am saddened with the loss of a great friend, Chesley George Power, CGA. I am far away in Barbados and can’t be there to give you my blessing for what you have done for me. You took me under your wing and taught me how to be an effective Logging Tax Auditor. You were a great example as my Supervisor, who I respected for your brilliance and thoughtfulness. The days and months working with you will never be forgotten. You were a simple man but knew how to bring out the best in your coworkers. You have had been blessed with a wonderful family, that you spoke humbly about. Chess you will not be forgotton, you are a great man.
