January 19, 1922 – October 21, 2010

Peacefully in Victoria, at the age of 88 years. Survived by his loving family, wife, Elizabeth of 62 years; son, Edward; daughter, Teresa; daughter-in-law, Jill and grandchildren, Robert and Katie. Born and raised in Victoria, Charles served with the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War and thereafter he worked for 35 years at the Dockyards. Charles was a founding member of the Haida Masonic Lodge, an active member of the YMCA, enjoyed racquetball and the Healthy Heart Group. He loved reading and learning and encouraged his family and others to pursue their education. Charles enjoyed his time at Shannon Oaks after living on the Dallas Road waterfront, where he and Betty spent many happy hours together. The family wish to thank Dr. Miles and Debbie for their care over the years. At Charles’ request, a private family service will be held. Flowers are gratefully declined; tributes, if desired, may be made to the Victoria Hospital Foundation or a charity of one’s choice. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallbros.com

Dear Betty, Ed, Teresa and family,
Your father’s passing reminds me/us again how precious every day is and that they should not be taken for granted. I feel your father understood this. He always seemed to enjoy the moments when our family visited.

I remember your father sitting calmly in the Dallas Rd house watching us play when we were children – silently enjoying our discoveries and eagerly taking the time to patently answer our questions when we asked–and challenging us with more questions and information. I realized as I grew, and traveled in the world myself, how important creating an environment of calmness, respect and discovery is–as a child and today as an adult.–as Charles seemed to do.

Whenever I visit Victoria with my friends from Japan, I always bring them to Clover Point to enjoy the view. Everyone stands silently and is amazed to discover that you can stand in one country and look at another. For me, my eyes always turn to the Dallas Road house and remember happy times our family spent visiting the Prior’s house.

I am grateful to Charles and you for your friendship/guidance provided with my parents, for providing me with these great memories that do remain an influence over a lifetime — and beyond.

Dear Betty, Teresa, Ed and family,
So very sorry to hear of your loss. It must be a very difficult time for you all. Hoping fond memories will help ease the pain and please know we are thinking of you. The many years of friendship that our parents shared was highly valued. It is your dad’s easy smile that I remember most vividly, he was a true gentleman.
    Take care,
    Susan (Strable/Swindells) and family

    Dear Betty,
We are very sorry to read about Charlie’s passing. You were both such good friends to our mother in your long association and connection with the Dallas Road waterfront.
Charlie was a true gentleman and we always noticed how much he loved you when we saw you together. We know how much you, Terry and Ed and his family will miss him.
Perhaps we will cross paths in your new neighbourhood as we sometimes did along Dallas Road.

    Take care,
    Elizabeth Black
