Catherine Stuart Phillips passed away peacefully in Duncan, B.C. on April 19, 2014.

She was born in Victoria on July 6th, 1919 to Stuart and Martha Hutchison and grew up on their idyllic family farm, Fashoda, in Happy Valley. Catherine had a loving and happy home with her sisters Esther, Elsie and brother George and their foster brother Alan Littler.

During the 50s and 60s, Catherine worked for Eatons wool department, then moved to Revelstoke and Vernon to help with a family air service and flying school.  She took flying lessons before even learning to drive a car!  It was during her time in Vernon that she was introduced to the Baha’i faith and made life-long friends in the Baha’i communities of Vernon, Victoria and Central Saanich. For many years Catherine co-owned and  operated the Piccadilly Shop for imported British fine fashions at 1017 Government St., Victoria. Upon it’s sale, she continued to work in retail and volunteer work until her mid-eighties.

She loved to read and travel, she appreciated all cultures and she was a life long learner but her joy came from spending time with family and friends.

Catherine was predeceased by her husband Harold (Bud) Phillips, her sister Esther, brother George and granddaughter Fiona.

She is survived by her sister Elsie Duncan, daughters Carole Morris and Diane Copley (George), foster daughter Anita Webster and niece Robin Mirrasoul (Mark), five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Many thanks to the staff at Sunridge Place for their loving care.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at McCall’s Downtown, Johnson & Vancouver Streets, at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 23, 2014.  Reception in McCall’s Family Centre and interment to follow at Hatley Memorial Gardens.  In lieu of flowers a donations to a charity of your choice would be welcome.  Condolences may be offered to the family below.

We were members of the Victoria Baha’i community for five years during Catherine’s time there and had the privilege of serving on the Spiritual Assembly with her during that time. We remember dear Catherine for her kind heart and steadfast devotion. Her quiet life of service has remained an example to us and to our family for the many decades since those days.

We received word of her passing while travelling in the USA and we regret that we won’t be able to attend the gathering, but we will be remembering Catherine in our prayers.
