Into my heart’s night

Along a narrow way I searched;

and lo! the light,

An infinite land of day. ~ Rumi

On November 20, 2011, a beautiful soul who brought light into the lives of so many turned at last away from the darkness. Among those you left behind, Kate – your beloved son Benjamin, partner Pierre and stepson Olivier; parents Tony and Rosemary; sisters Jane and Sarah (Stephen); and many other relatives and friends – you will live on forever in our hearts.

Born June 30, 1964, Kate’s life journey touched many people and many places. From her birthplace in Guildford, England, she attended St. Theresa’s Boarding School in Effingham before traveling with her family to Holland and, later on, northern Alberta’s Fort McMurray…earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and English as a Second Language Teaching Certificate at the University of Calgary…enlarged her artistic spirit as a student at Alberta College of Art & Design…spent five years in Dubai with her first husband Chris…lived in Calgary, Vancouver and Barrie, Ontario, before finally settling in Sooke near the southernmost shores of Vancouver Island…and taught ESL at Calgary’s YWCA, Vancouver’s English Language Centre and the University of Victoria. Witty, artistic, loving and kind, she was adored by her students, cherished by family, admired by friends. We will all miss her dearly.

Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Kate’s life in the Rainbow Room at the Chief and Petty Officers’ Mess, 1575 Lyall Street in Esquimalt, BC, on Saturday, November 26 at 1:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Kate’s memory to the Canadian Mental Health Association, www.cmha.ca. Condolences to Kate’s family may be made below.

    Dear Rosemary and Tony, I can not tell you how shocked and saddened I am by your news, received today. I remember Kate when she was young in Holland, as a delightful little girl full of laughter and mischief. Your loss can not be put into words and I would like you to know that my heart goes out to you and all the members of your family especially her son, Benjamin. I send my love to all of you.
    Trish

    I so enjoyed working with Kate, and will really miss our chats at the photocopier and at the computers. Especially her delightful sense of humour. She will be very much missed at Uvic. All my best to her family.

    Kate, you left this world to early. We will always remember the times we had together in Dubai before you moved back to Canada. With Ben born only a week after our son, Stefan, we shared the pregnancy time and the joy of both healthy boys being born in August of 1996. We will always remember the happy times in Dubai. Kate will be remembered in our hearts. Petter & Kristy Nyberg, Kingdom of Bahrain
