November 25, 1919 – July 9, 2015

The night of Thursday July 9th our Mom and Gran left us, quickly and peacefully. Born in Victoria to Leonard and Flora Mannix (Toms), she grew up in a lively and loving family with siblings Frank (Rita), George (Ruth), Nony (Bert), Byryid (Rob) and Kathy (John).  In April 1942 she married her sweetheart Fred just before he started his service in WWII.  After the war they built their home in Marigold and over the course of their 50 years together raised 4 children, Neal (Jennifer), Nony, Joan (John), Craig (Kerrie) and welcomed 7 very cherished grandchildren, Aaron (Mara), Suzanne (Paul), Blair, Matt (Kate), Katie, Brent and Nicole.  Of special joy were her great grandchildren, Alexandra, Isabel, Zach & Hanna.  Fred predeceased her in 1992.  She is survived by one sister, Kathy Parry of Winnipeg and her sister-in-law Ruth Mannix.

Mom lived by the motto, “all that we sent into the lives of others comes back into our own” and her family and friends were the recipients of her home cooking, knitted sweaters and afghans, generous heart and helping hands.

She enjoyed travelling with Fred, visiting her sister Kath in Chile, Ghana & Winnipeg but her favorite times were having all her family together at the beach in Parksville.

She enjoyed her final years living independently at the Wellsley.  She leaves many friends, nieces and nephews.  She will be missed for her sense of humor, zest for life and loving nature.  We, her family have been truly blessed to have had our Mom, Gran, Great-Gran in our lives for so many years.   A service will be held Saturday, July 18th 2015 at 2:30 pm in McCall’s Floral Chapel, Johnson & Vancouver Streets in Victoria.

Flowers gratefully declined.  If so desired donations can be made in her memory to the TransCanada Trail http://tctrail.ca/donate/

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

  • Blanche Smith

I and all my family have over 50 years of happy memories of your Mother starting with our shared Parksville camping holidays and oyster feasts! How fortunate I was to then have Blanche as my next door neighbour at the Wellesley for the past 5 years.

  • Barbara Scherr

I had the joy of talking with Mrs. Hilborne every second week through the Sendial program where I volunteer every Thursday. While I never had the pleasure of meeting your Mom face to face, I called her my “Thursday morning sunshine.” What a wonderful lady! When I asked her how she was, sometimes she would answer “cranky” but with a warm chuckle at the end of that answer. My co-worker Laurie and I will miss her very much.
I am so very sorry for your loss.

  • Mike Smith & Lorrie Thomas

May fond memories of your mother bring you comfort during this most difficult time.
Our thoughts are with you and your family,
    Mike and Lorrie

My co-worker and I were so upset to hear that Mrs. Hilborne had passed away. We are Sendial volunteers and I have been calling Blanche for several years, every Thursday morning. She brightened up my day with her wonderful laugh and though sometimes she claimed she was feeling grumpy, she was always friendly and warm. We are going to miss her very much and I just wanted to let her family know how much we enjoyed speaking to her every week.
    Sending you my heart-felt condolences,
    Laurie Auger
