Beth Marion McMahen (née Rice-Jones)

Beth Marion McMahen (née Rice-Jones)

Passed away with her dear sister Isobel by her side, on January 10, 2012. Beth was born in May 1919 in Calgary, then grew up in Winnipeg. She graduated in nursing from Winnipeg General Hospital, then joined the Canadian Army as a Nursing Sister during the war. She served in hospitals in England, where she met her future husband Willard (Bill), who also served in the Medical Corps. After the war they settled in Victoria, where Bill established his medical practice while Beth raised their three sons John, Ivor and Chris. She was predeceased by Bill in 1981. Beth was an active member of the congregation of St. Mary’s Oak Bay, the Nursing Sisters’ Association of Canada and the White Cane Club. In earlier years Beth was an avid traveller, bridge player, and eager participant in whatever life had to offer. She was known for welcoming others and making them feel included.

Beth is survived by her sister Isobel, sons John (Diana), Ivor (Ann) and Chris (Heather) and seven grandchildren. She was delighted to hear of the birth of her first great-grandchild, Sophie, just days before she died. She will be greatly missed by her family who were so very important to her and by the many friends whose lives she touched.

The family would like to thank Dr. Kevin Wylie for his attentive care over the years, and all the staff at St. Charles Manor for making Beth welcome and comfortable in this last year of her life. Service to be announced at a later date. Condolences may be offered to the family below.
