PETERSEN, Barbara Victoria
March 11, 1920 – February 4, 2010
Born in Westlock, Alberta, Barbara passed away peacefully at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital, after a short illness. Predeceased by her husband Bernard Petersen in 1993 and her sister Mary Simmons in 2007, she is survived by her brother Ken Travers (Glenn), brother-in-law Geoff Simmons and many special nieces and nephews, whom she affectionately referred to as “her family”. Barb and Bern were married in Lethbridge, Alberta in 1963 and spent many happy years travelling in their RV plus extended trips to Europe to visit Bern’s family in Denmark. They greatly enjoyed fishing trips to Beaver Mines in the Alberta foothills and visits to the West Coast. Barb was an ardent fisherman and her quick eye and lightening reflex caught many an unwary trout sniffing her baited hook. She was also an avid Canuck hockey fan. Barb moved to Sidney, B.C. in 1996 and lived on her own until entering the hospital. When she reluctantly gave up her car she purchased a scooter and “scooted” around Sidney to attend to all her business. She was an active organized senior to the very end. Barb was born with an indomitable spirit and despite a severe hearing disability from early youth she was always upbeat and cheerful. She was a very special lady and had a positive and encouraging influence on all who knew her, particularly her nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to the Mt. Newton Centre staff, also the doctors and wonderful nurses at the hospital who took such good care of her. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the Mount Newton Centre or the Saanich Peninsula Hospital foundation. A private family service will be held.
