August 12, 1928 – January 23, 2014

On Thursday January 23, 2014 Barbara May Martin died peacefully at the James Bay Care Centre. Predeceased by husband, Kenneth and sister Helen Ruth. Loving mother to Julia (Greg), Sally (Roger) and John. Dear grandmother to Harry, Thomas, Edward and Richard.

Barbara hails from Magog, Quebec. She was the daughter of veterinarian Dr. C.S. Harris and spent a lot of time with her father going on calls to local farms. Barbara’s mother Frances (nee Embury) was a United Empire Loyalist and very active in the United Church. Barbara attended grade 12 at Stanstead College and obtained her teaching certificate from MacDonald College, Montreal. She taught school in northern Quebec for two years and after she was married became a supply teacher in Magog. Barbara was a selfless volunteer for many clubs and activities including establishing the first Public Library in Magog; past president of the Women’s Canadian Club Sherbrooke; the Magog Curling Club. She was a natural athlete and excelled at softball, downhill skiing, hockey and curling. Barbara never turned down a game of bridge!

Barbara is survived by her brother-in-law Bill Martin, her nephew Alec Martin (Sharon), her niece Nancy Martin (Ken).

An afternoon tea to remember Barbara will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2013 from 2:00pm – 4:30 pm at the Canadian Scottish Officer’s Mess at 715 Bay Street, Victoria. Parking and entrance to the Armoury is on Field Street (off of Douglas St.).

In lieu of flowers a contribution to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada would be appreciated by the family.
