October 3, 1915 – July 8, 2014

Barbara died peacefully in Victoria, BC at the age of 98.  She was born in Salmon Arm, BC.  Predeceased by her husband, John Elliott, in 2006, Barbara is survived by her son, Michael (Carol) Whately and stepson, Peter (Lilia) Elliott; her granddaughters Jennifer (Chris), Marilyn (Keith) and Sarah (Steph); step grandsons, Richard and Andrew and great-grandchildren, Sam, Kellen, Ember and Tessa.

Barbara did all of her schooling at St. Ann’s Academy in Victoria. Upon graduation, she “walked across the road” (Humboldt St.) and entered St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing.  She became a Registered Nurse in May, 1938.  In 1939, Barbara found herself in England where, at the onset of WWII, she joined Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service as a “Nursing Officer”.  She returned to Canada in 1948 and following a five-year stint as Matron of Grand Forks and District Hospital, she came home to Victoria to finish her nursing career at Royal Jubilee Hospital. In retirement, Barbara enjoyed socializing and traveling with her many old (and new) friends.  She was an avid bridge player.  She adored her grandchildren.  In her mid ’70’s, she met and married the kind and loving John Elliott who was her rock and soul mate in their twilight years.

A heartfelt thank you to the wonderful and caring staff of Mount St. Mary Hospital, and to Dr. Michael Mawdsley.
