January 2, 1919 – April 6, 2015

Alice passed away peacefully, her beloved sons Ross and Rod (Alison Brown) at her side, leaving us to remember the intelligence, pragmatism, grace, modesty and humour we knew so well. Predeceased by her husband of more than 50 years, Roderick Lorraine Munro (1913-2001) whom she met on the ski slopes of St. Saveur and daughter, Penny Rybka (1948 – 2008). Survived by her beloved grandchildren, Marek (Laura), Jan (Natalie), Elizabeth (Dan) and Alexander; great-grandchildren, Zofia and Kasimir and son-in-law, Witek Rybka.

Alice and Rod moved to Victoria, BC after raising their family in Woodlands, Quebec. She was the first female president of a Quebec school board, loved to drive fast cars, masterfully played bridge and golf and always enjoyed and marvelled at nature, carrying a fossil hammer in the trunk of her car just in case!

A Memorial Service will be held in the Interfaith Chapel at the University of Victoria, Parking Lot 6 on Saturday, April 11 at 3:00pm followed by a reception at Uplands Golf Club, 3300 Cadboro Bay Road.  Condolences may be offered to the family below.

I recall vividly the time Alice drove my wife Anne and me out to her golf club for lunch almost two years ago.. She was probably ninety-four, but her advanced age was not in any way obvious . It was one of the most exciting rides of my life, – like a Formula One race through city traffic. Despite her age she was in complete control, loving every nifty maneuver.
Alice had a remarkable zest for life, and it was contagious, so that she made others happy. She never seemed old because she thought young. There was never a generation gap with younger people (which is to say almost everyone else).

Sincere condolences to Alice’s family and loved ones. It was a pleasure and an honour to have gotten to know Aunt Alice a little bit. What a remarkable woman she was – an example for us all in remaining engaged and connected throughout life. A life well and fully lived.

Ross, my sincerest condolences to you, your brother and extended family. Losing a mum is not easy, regardless of age. It is losing a lifelong friend. May you have fond memories to cherish for years to come.
    sincerely,

She always seemed so well-balanced and grounded in good humour to me. An honour to have known her. My respects to all who were close to Alice.
