Robert P. Chapman

September 28, 2011

One day while reading the newspaper, Bob Chapman asked his son if he knew what the leading cause of death in Victoria was. His son didn’t know. Gesturing at the obituary page, Bob informed him that it was a great sense of humour. Indeed, almost everyone included there was noted for his or her sense of humour. When faced with such a disquieting fact, one can either determine to become a curmudgeon or keep on laughing in the face of what inevitably faces us all. Bob kept his humour wry and dry for 85 years, until succumbing to pneumonia on September 25, 2011.

Robert, the son of Robert Harris and Mary (Pringle) Chapman, was born in Hartland, NB. He graduated in physics from Mount Allison, McGill and the University of Saskatchewan. In 1953 he joined the Naval Research Establishment in Dartmouth, NS, where he established himself as an expert in underwater acoustic reverberation. In 1973 he transferred to the Defence Research Establishment Pacific (DREP) in Esquimalt, BC, to lead an investigation in the use of towed arrays in passive sonar. During his last decade there he was Director of the Physics Research Division. He retired in 1995, after which he edited and contributed to a history of DREP, Alpha and Omega, published in 1997.

Bob enjoyed playing duplicate bridge, eating lobsters, listening to operas, researching his family tree (disappointingly, none of his ancestors, mostly hardy Yorkshire farmers, turned out to be a colourful scoundrel), refining his anecdotes, watching English murder mysteries on TV, supporting the Mount Allison Mounties football team, and thinking Conservatively. He was predeceased by his brother, Jack, and through the years continued to take great pleasure in his weekly telephone conversations with his sister-in-law, Ollie. He is survived by daughter, Laura (Frazer) of Dartmouth, daughter, Janet of Montreal, son, Brian of Victoria and grandchildren, Tamara (Alec), Amanda and Peter. They will miss him. Bob’s family would like to give special thanks to Viktor and the other home support staff of Beacon Community Services, Dr. Ted Rosenberg and his team and the nursing and respiratory staff at the Victoria General Hospital. After cremation, Bob’s ashes will be interred in the family plot in Port Elgin, NB. There will be no service. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallbros.com.

Elizabeth “Ella” Webb (nee Schmidt)

September 23, 2011

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Elizabeth Webb at the age of 89 on Sept. 21, 2011. Ella was born on April 5, 1922 in Cactus Lake, Saskatchewan. At least, that is what her birth certificate says. In the commotion of a birth at home in rural Saskatchewan, the certification of her birth seems to have been delayed four days, hence the celebration of Ella’s birthday every first of April. She grew up on her family’s farm as the eldest of Frank and Elisabeth Schmidt’s ten children. Ella received her schooling in Saskatchewan in one-room pioneer schoolhouses, beginning at Edenview School and finishing in grade 8 at Gottlob School. In 1936 she moved with her family to Marwayne, Alberta where she worked in the cookhouse of a ranch. In November of 1945 she moved to Victoria in search of work. She began working as a nanny for a doctor’s family, but quickly left this position to instead take a job at Seven Oaks Store. It was at the Seven Oaks Store where Ella met her future husband, Larry Webb, who, after his first visit to the store, became a frequent customer. It wasn’t long until they were dating, and soon after they were married at St Anthony Church in Loydminister, Saskatchewan. Ella and Larry raised their seven children, Ken (Madeline), Doreen, Gary, Ron (Barb), Bill (Pam), Louise (Jim), and Diane (Steve), in their family home on Union Road. This home included the beautiful garden in which she enjoyed working until the very end, despite the conflicting relationship she shared with the resident deer family. In her later years, Ella excelled in her role as a doting grandmother and great-grandmother, spoiling her family with her delicious baking and cozy slippers. Within the Sacred Heart congregation Ella made many life long friendships. We thank her for her numerous contributions to the CWL, Sacred Heart Church, and St. Vincent-de-Paul. Ella was sincerely loved by all who knew her. Her unwavering kindness and compassion will ever be an inspiration to us all.

For Ella’s family and friends there will be Visitation at MCCALL BROS., Johnson and Vancouver Streets from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm on Tuesday, September 27, 2011. A Funeral Service to be held at 11:00 am at SACRED HEART CHURCH, 4040 Nelthorpe Rd., on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 followed by a reception. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallbros.com.
