Margaret (Peggy) Selbie Pearlman

Margaret (Peggy) Selbie Pearlman
August 27, 1915 – July 24, 2011

Peggy Pearlman passed away on July 24, 2011 at the age of 95. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Ed. She is survived by and will be deeply missed by her son Paul, her daughter- in- law Stephanie, her grandchildren Lisa and Robert, her brother John Taylor, her nieces and nephews Sari, Matthew, Lisa, Everard, Sherry, and Joyce, their families and her many friends.

Peggy was born at Telegraph Point, British Columbia and raised first in the cannery town of Port Essington on the Skeena River, and later, in Victoria. In 1939 she travelled to London to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, but had to return to Canada on the outbreak of the Second World War. She found employment as a social worker in Vancouver, and later met and married Ed in 1943, before he went overseas to serve with the Canadian Army in Europe. After she married, Peggy devoted her life to her family and her home, and developed and cherished a wide circle of friends.

Peggy Pearlman had a zest for life, a strong sense of her own style, and loved to travel. She and Ed shared fond memories of summer trips to Lake O’Hara in the Rockies, and vacations in Europe, Asia, Latin America, and South Africa. Peggy took pride in the accomplishments of all of her family, including her grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and their children. In later years she met the challenges and infirmities of aging with grace and resilience. She was determined to maintain her own independence, and succeeded in doing so until the end.

Our family thanks all the staff of Berwick House, and her many friends there.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday August 6, 2011 at 2:00 pm at St. Matthias Anglican Church, 600 Richmond Road (at Richardson), in Victoria. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallbros.com.

Marie Albina Ziller

July 29, 2011

ZILLER, Marie Albina Lemony was born in Pokesudie, New Brunswick on June 2 (thereabouts), 1912. She was orphaned at a young age and lived with various relatives and their families, before settling down in Fort William (now Thunderbay) with a particularly notorious stepmother (aunt). She enrolled and subsequently graduated from Teachers College (Northbay Ont.) and taught in the Catholic school system in Fort William. She met her husband to be, a university professor, Wolf Ziller (predeceased) there and after a courtship period, they drove west, were married and settled in Victoria. It was on a trip to India that Lemonys life shifted. Always a seeker with a strong spirtual nature, she was directed to a Guru who lived in a village in the northern Punjab. She became an initiate and devotee, and upon returning to Victoria became instrumental in directing others to this Spiritual path. She had a tremendous humor and sharp wit (I often thought of her as zinger Ziller). She was as honest and charitable as I would only strive to be. She was loved by many, and her smiling happy face will be missed by all who knew her. She escaped the confines of her mortality at 9:00pm, June 24th. God speed Lemony…I’ll see you there! “The old gray mare she aint what she used to be.”….. One of her favourite sayings. Radha Soami. Condolences may be offered at www.mccallbros.com.

January 17, 1918 – July 18, 2011

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Antonio Basile Katahanas at the age of 93. ln Canada, he is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Eleni; his daughters, Angela (Bruno) and Effy (Greg); his grandchildren, Antonnia, Zinnia and Nevio and nephew, Vasilis Antoniadis. Born in Lesvos, Greece, Antonio left his home at the age of 16 in search of a better life for himself and his future family. Along the way, he encountered many trials, tribulations and adventures. He fought on the frontlines during WWII, as well as in the Greek Civil War where he was imprisoned for his political beliefs. With the end of the Civil war, he went on to serve in the Greek Merchant Marine affording him the opportunity to see much of the world. He chose to settle in Canada in 1959, starting in Montreal. Working his way across the country, he eventually settled in Prince Rupert where he started his retail business, got married and began to raise his family. Retiring in Victoria in 1978, he built his dream home where he spent hours cultivating his garden of many vegetables and fruit trees. A man of few words, he firmly believed that actions spoke louder. He lived a healthy, full life with honesty, conviction, and perseverance. We would like to express sincere thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Royal Jubilee Hospital for the loving care and support they provided Antonio and his family. His greatest joy was his family who will miss him dearly as will his surviving relatives and friends in Canada, Greece and the United States.
