Norma Irene Bell
February 16, 2010
March 14, 1927 – February 14, 2010
Passed away peacefully at Victoria Hospice after a feisty 3-year battle with lymphoma. Her positive, determined attitude helped her confound medical prognostications once again and, after fighting the good fight, she left us on her own terms.
Predeceased by newborn daughter in 1966 and husband Jim in 1995. Survived by son James, daughter Margaret (Lloyd), son Gordon (Ronda) and grandchildren Megan and Shaun.
Norma was born in Winnipeg to Ralph and Irene Greene, and grew up in Stony Mountain. She knew from a young age that she would be a nurse and in 1948 graduated from Winnipeg’s St. Boniface School of Nursing. Hospitalized with TB in 1949, Norma survived it as well as the mass hospital evacuation to Saskatchewan during the 1950 Winnipeg flood.
Norma met James Bell in Flin Flon while working as an ER nurse and they married in 1954. In 1967 Jim, Norma and their three kids relocated to Winnipeg. After several years nursing, she moved to epidemiology at the Manitoba Cancer Clinic. She enjoyed her work and colleagues but soon found her niche as Patient Care Coordinator, Northern Medical Unit, where she assisted Inuit patients and their families receiving health care or treatments in their remote communities and in Winnipeg. In spite of language gaps, her empathy and warmth made their experience less daunting.
Jim and Norma lived in Kenora for a few years post-retirement, then followed their kids to Vancouver Island, setting up residence in Parksville. Jim died suddenly in 1995 and Norma soon moved to Victoria.
Although Norma lived an average lifespan, she was above average in her ability to enjoy life and friends, while accepting with a smile any troubles life brought her way. Norma was Mom to many more than her three kids and loved to prove that hugs are the true wonder drug. She treasured the lifelong connections and the many reunions with her St. Boniface nursing classmates.
Volunteering was an important part of her life beginning with knitting in 1941 for the war effort. As an adult she was a member of the Flin Flon Kinettes and Winnipeg Kinettes, volunteered at Parksville Society of Services, and then at Fairfield Seniors Centre in Victoria. She loved to read, listen to music, garden, bake and cook, embroider and sew, and had a good eye for art and design. She faced life honestly, with integrity, and believed in being responsible for one’s actions. She viewed us all with anticipation that we’d do our best but loved us anyways when we showed our foibles and quirks.
Service at McCall Bros Floral Chapel, Johnson & Vancouver St, Victoria, on Thursday, February 18 at 11:00 am.
Norma and Jim’s ashes will be scattered together near their favourite Vancouver Island walking trail. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations, if desired, to Our Place Society or to Victoria Hospice Foundation.
Fare thee well, Normie. Your love, generosity and indomitable spirit touched many and we shall cherish our memories of you.

Loretta Cecelia Taylor (nee Lineham)
February 10, 2010
Taylor – Loretta Cecelia (nee Lineham). With great sadness we announce the passing of our mother on February 4, 2010, with her family by her side. Loretta was born in Victoria December 10, 1926. Predeceased by parents Harold and Josephine Lineham, sister Miriam, nephew Gordon, nieces Daphne and Michelle, and by Robert Taylor. Survived by sons Mark (Elizabeth) and Michael (Tes), granddaughters Alyssa and Meghan, sister Bernadette Smith (Bernard), three nieces and many cousins and their families, “co-grandmother” Evy, and dear friends.
Loretta graduated in 1948 from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing and embarked on a great adventure, nursing in Salt Lake City, Bakersfield, Red Deer, and Victoria. She retired in 1984 after many years as Head Nurse, 3rd Floor, Mount St. Mary’s Hospital and spent much of the next 25 years at her favourite place in this world, her cabin on Salt Spring Island. There, always the “hostess with the mostest”, she kept busy entertaining family and friends, serving her famous Salt Spring Island Breakfasts, reading, swimming, spoiling all the dogs with cookies, and enjoying her Heaven on Earth.
She always said “Life is hard, but what is a heaven for?” – well now you know Mum, enjoy!
Heartfelt thanks to the staff of Glengarry Hospital, Fairfield Unit, who enjoyed Loretta’s sense of humour and provided compassionate care during her brief stay. A funeral mass will be held at noon Friday, February 12 at St. Andrew’s Cathedral, corner of Blanshard and View Streets, Victoria, BC, followed by interment at Royal Oak Burial Park, 4673 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC. Barbara Victoria Petersen
February 9, 2010
PETERSEN, Barbara Victoria
March 11, 1920 – February 4, 2010
Born in Westlock, Alberta, Barbara passed away peacefully at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital, after a short illness. Predeceased by her husband Bernard Petersen in 1993 and her sister Mary Simmons in 2007, she is survived by her brother Ken Travers (Glenn), brother-in-law Geoff Simmons and many special nieces and nephews, whom she affectionately referred to as “her family”. Barb and Bern were married in Lethbridge, Alberta in 1963 and spent many happy years travelling in their RV plus extended trips to Europe to visit Bern’s family in Denmark. They greatly enjoyed fishing trips to Beaver Mines in the Alberta foothills and visits to the West Coast. Barb was an ardent fisherman and her quick eye and lightening reflex caught many an unwary trout sniffing her baited hook. She was also an avid Canuck hockey fan. Barb moved to Sidney, B.C. in 1996 and lived on her own until entering the hospital. When she reluctantly gave up her car she purchased a scooter and “scooted” around Sidney to attend to all her business. She was an active organized senior to the very end. Barb was born with an indomitable spirit and despite a severe hearing disability from early youth she was always upbeat and cheerful. She was a very special lady and had a positive and encouraging influence on all who knew her, particularly her nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to the Mt. Newton Centre staff, also the doctors and wonderful nurses at the hospital who took such good care of her. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the Mount Newton Centre or the Saanich Peninsula Hospital foundation. A private family service will be held.
