Passed away in Victoria, BC on January 19, 2010. He was born in Shotts, Scotland on July 2, 1924. Predeceased by his wife, Bertha in 1999. Survived by his daughter, Joyce and son, Rob; sisters, Jeannie Hendra (Mel) of Victoria, Helen Howe (Denny) of Victoria; sister-in-law, Deanna McMillan of Burnaby; brother-in-law, George Christianson (Marlene) of Powell River and many extended family and friends. Joe served in WWII in the First Special Forces and was a long time member of the Uplands Golf Club.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Uplands Golf Club on Tuesday, January 26, 2010 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to charity of choice.

Thomas B. Lawrie

Lawrie, Thomas B. – born on February 18, 1920 in Calgary Alberta passed away peacefully on January 14, 2010 in Victoria, B.C. at the dawn of his 90th Birthday. Thomas is survived by his loving sister, Margaret Dancer; brother-in-law, Donald Dancer of Santa Barbara, California; his niece, Marion Dancer of Santa Clarita, California; his niece, Sandy Dancer; great nieces, Julie, Kelly, and Jenna Gamba of Aix-en-Provence, France, and his second cousin, Geoffrey Inverarity of Vancouver. After returning from the war, Tom went back to his job at Barber Ellis of Canada, Ltd., Canada’s largest stationary manufacturer, where he worked his way up to Branch Manager in Regina, Saskatchewan, then transferred to Victoria in 1978 to head up their west coast operations. Tom retired from the Company in 1985. As a Bell Ringer and active member of Rotary for over 55 years, Tom was rewarded with Rotary’s song service reward in 2000, on the occasion of his 80th Birthday. Tom was an avid golfer and was a member of the Glen Meadows Golf club where he continued playing well into his 80′s.

A service will be held at MCCALL BROS. FAMILY CHAPEL, Johnson and Vancouver Streets on Wednesday, January 20th at 11:00 am with Reverend D. Hatfield officiating.

Born on March 28, 1933 in Kai Ping, China. Passed away peacefully on January 14, 2010. He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia Wong in 1991 and his brother-in-law, Harden Lee. He leaves to cherish his memory, siblings, Betty Jean, Donald (May), Willie (Jaci), Eugenie (Bowman), Gary and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dr. Gilbert Chew, Beacon Community Services, Victoria Hospice and special thanks to Kathy Speight at the VIHA Home and Community Care.

Georgette passed away peacefully at Glengarry Hospital on Dec. 14, 2009. She is survived by her daughter Linda (Peter) Caverhill, sister Joyce (Al) Vey, and nephew Fred (Hazel) Vey and children Rupert and Emma. Georgette graduated as a teacher from the Provincial Normal School in Victoria in 1936 and taught for several years in remote locations in BC. She then turned her hand to floral arrangement, which was both a profession and a hobby.

Georgette had a unique ability to see wonder and joy in the smallest and simplest things, and always had a passionate interest in life and the people around her. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Ike Connick

Passed away suddenly in Victoria, BC on January 12, 2010. He was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1956. Predeceased by his parents, Joyce and Ron Connick. Survived by his son, Kyle; sister, Sheril Connick; girlfriend, Arlene Radford & her son, Reuben and many extended family and friends. Prior to moving to Victoria, Ike worked for many years on the oil rigs in Alberta, a job he thoroughly enjoyed. After moving to Victoria, Ike began a new career with Public Works for Esquimalt and later for the City of Colwood. Ike was an avid outdoorsman who especially enjoyed fishing and action shooting. He was a long time member and was on the executive of the Victoria Fish and Game Club. Ike was a kind and gentle person who dedicated much of his time to helping others. He will be dearly missed by all who loved and knew him.

A gathering of family and friends will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, #107-1001 Cloverdale Avenue, Victoria, BC, V8X 4C9.

Glen passed away peacefully with his family at his side at St. Charles Manor in Victoria, BC. Born in Moncton N.B. and predeceased by his parents, Reverend A.I. and Leona Higgins. He leaves his loving wife of 45 years, Sharron (nee Holdridge); daughter, Laurena (Drew) Olsen; son, Gordon (Phillippa Brown); grandchildren, Sean, Simon, Shannon and Rachel; brother, Ralph (Sue); niece, Liz (Rob) Verwoord; nephews, David (Catherina), Chris (Christine); Connie Higgins; cousin Yvonne (Erwin) Rose; sister in law, Carol Ellis and her children Toby, Philippa (Tony) and David Ellis.
Glen attended schools in Halifax, Ottawa and graduated from Vic High in 1956. He attended The Eastern Ontario Institute of Technology from 1959-1962. His career spanned 37 years with B.C. Ministry of Highways. Unique equipment projects he developed were a one-off gas powered snow plough and the Deas Island Tunnel washer. Glen’s many talents as a mechanic and creative craftsman were well known.
His maritime heritage impassioned him to build and skipper many yachts in local and international races with Royal Victoria Yacht Club friends. He served as Rear Commodore at RVYC, Commodore of Turkey Head Sailing Association, and Measurer for the International Thunderbird Association Executive. In later years, he and Sharron left the racing circuit to cruise the coast aboard their MV’s “Sunny Daze” and “Silent Motion”. Glen will always be remembered by his family for his love and steadfast support of their activities and achievements. Special thanks to Dr. Alan Cook, Family Practitioner for many years.
Memorial Service to be held at First Metropolitan Church, 932 Balmoral Ave, on Wednesday January 20, at 2pm. Reception to follow at Royal Victoria Yacht Club, 3475 Ripon Rd. MCKEE Irene Frances – Peacefully on January 11, 2010 at the Gardens at Qualicum Beach. She was born on July 22, 1914 in Calgary, Alberta. Predeceased by her husband, Charles “Ted” in 1993, Irene is survived by her son, James Edward of Regina; her daughter, Catherine Lillian (Ronald) Fletcher of Honeymoon Bay, BC; grandchildren, Jennifer, Patricia and Sara of BC and Taryn and Austin of Regina; her brother, James Moffatt of Verdun, MB; her sisters, Mary (Charles) Cowherd of Calgary and Vierlyn (Allan) Hampshier of Courtenay. Our dear graceful Marjorie passed away peacefully on January 9th at the Victoria Hospice. Born in Winnipeg, she enjoyed happy years in Montreal and later Victoria. Predeceased by her loving husband, Edward in 2002, and earlier by her brother Neil. Much beloved mother and mother-in-law of Johanna and Ian. She will be sadly missed by her other family and friends, near and far.

Compassionate, she did volunteer work for many organizations. Passionate about the arts, she was a creative potter and sculptor; a writer, a reader and a wicked scrabble player. She adored her family, friends and her garden.

Special thanks to the staff of the Royal Jubilee Hospital and the Victoria Hospice, and her loving homecare ladies.

Patricia Joyce Horsfield

It is with sincere sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother and bubba, Patricia Joyce Horsfield (nee Whitebread), on January 11th 2010 at the age of 76. She was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba on July 12, 1933. Later, with five children at home (Hugh Doherty), Patricia graduated in 1966 with the first Quo Vadis registered nursing class. From there, she rose steadily through the medical profession until she retired as Assistant Administrator of Highland Lodge, LTC (Langley). Throughout a lifetime of giving and caring, she was a past president of CWL, founded and served as Akela for the 273 cub pack, a Kinette, a founding member of the Northern Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation, established the first palliative care unit for AIDS patients in Western Canada, and other acts of charity and selfless service too numerous to mention.

Patricia passed away while surrounded by her entire family, from across the country, with much love in the room. She will be dearly missed by her husband of 43 years Peter, children Brian (Louise), Timothy (Victoria), Patrick (Barb) , Shannon (Cam), Andrew (Christine), Melanie and Gillian; grandchildren Tyler, Trisha (Shawn), Elise (Kevin), Amanda, Sean, Tristan, Nathaniel, Carson, Graydon, Neisha, Marie, and Thomas; as well as great granddaughter Cadence.

A special thank you to the doctors and staff at the Victoria Hospice and the BC Cancer Agency, as well as the support and service of the staff at the Medicine Shoppe in Parksville and Victoria for the care our special lady received.

Hector Ivan “John” Johnston

Hector Ivan “John” Johnston passed away peacefully on January 2, 2010 at Broadmead Lodge, Victoria, where he had resided for the past two years. He is survived by his brother L. R. (Bud) Johnston (Florence) of Red Deer, AB, nieces Marilyn (Feddo) Oosterhuis, Susan (Orest) Kostyniuk, Penny (Dale) Ullrich and Wendy (Wayne) Richardson, his nephew Stephen (Patricia) Johnston and his niece Sheila Johnston. He is also survived by brother-in-law George Scott, nieces and nephews, several great nieces and nephews and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Bunty, and his sisters Leta and Iris. John was born February 9, 1922 in Sylvan Lake, AB and raised in Calgary. He joined the Calgary Highlanders during the Second World War and rose to the rank of lieutenant. In England, he met and married Bunty, the love of his life. After the war, they settled in Victoria where John began his career as a civil servant at the Victoria Land Title Office and later became manager of the Office of the Superintendent of Insurance in Victoria until his retirement. They loved to cruise and travelled the world. They were active for many years at the Gorge Vale Golf Club where John was Club President in 1955-56.
