Pauline Whelan (nee Beausoleil)
January 28, 2010
Died suddenly at her residence in Victoria, BC, on Thursday, January 21st, 2010. She was born in Lachine, Quebec, on April 30, 1921. Predeceased by her husband, William, in 2003; Pauline is survived by her sister Simone, her children, Diane (John) Ward, Billy (Linda), and Bobby (Danielle); her grandchildren, Billy, Jennifer, Catherine and Guillaume, her friend Ron and great-grandchildren. She will be missed by her many friends and staff at The Kensington who have shown such kindness to her through the years and by many other relatives and friends both here and out of province. Pauline and Bill fell in love and were married in the province of Québec. It was a union of Catholic and Protestant, French and English culture, a dynamic which played itself out throughout their marriage and was passed on to their children. The bilingualism made life very “interesting” at home. Pauline spoke both languages freely and her heavy french accent was just part of her charm. Pauline was a highly spirited woman, who shied not from showing her true emotions. She had many interests. A very organized, practical and disciplined housekeeper, she ran a clean shop. She also worked as a bookkeeper for many years with a construction company. Pauline played tennis and was dubbed “Jo bras d’fer” by her peers. For years she handcrafted and sold fine clay figurines. Later in life, her passion was painting but she had to stop with the onset of macular degeneration. Pauline’s greatest pleasure was listening to music. When she loved a particular piece, she would listen to it, over and over, without ever tiring of it. Pauline adored Chopin and Celine Dion. Something she was most proud of was her ability to imitate the call of the Black Capped Chickadee and have one land on her shoulder. She really nailed it. Her spirit will continue to soar through the call of her little feathered friends.
A celebration of Pauline’s life will be held later, in the Spring, when Mom will return to Mt. St. Hilaire, Quebec, to be reunited with her husband, where together, they will rest in peace.

Bruce passed away suddenly in Victoria at the age of 50. He is survived by his loving family; daughter, Jessica Campbell; mother, Nancy; father, Larry & wife, Lillian; brother, Jim; sister, Sheila & husband, Monty; and favorite (and only) nephew, Jordan. Bruce was blessed to have had so many close friends that stood by him through thick and thin. He, in return, was a true friend — with a great sense of humour. If you had a problem with your computer, car, toaster or shoe, a call to Bruce would solve it. His talent, knowledge, memory and communication skills were astounding. We have lost a treasure.

Leonard Sidney George Sims
January 22, 2010
June 11, 1918 – January 21, 2010
At 91 years of age, our beloved father has gone to explore a whole new world. He was surrounded by his family as he peacefully left us. Dad is survived by his loving partner of 13 years, Ruth; daughters, Sandra (Robert) and Darlene (Graeme); 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his little sister, Ruby (Bill). Predeceased by his first wife of 28 years, Dorothy (Bowerman), second wife, Joan and grandson, Garry and his five siblings. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy for 25 years serving in both WWII and the Korean War. We will miss his amazing stories that he shared with such enthusiasm (a lot of them humourous). He was known for his wry sense of humour, strength and courage as he faced life’s numerous challenges in his later years. Dad loved his bridge games with Ruth and the crew, countless hours of fishing and his Saturday morning breakfasts out. His visits with all the grandchildren were always exciting and made for much noise, fun and laughter. He had a truly wonderful life and was much loved by all. We would like to thank Dr. Ripley and all the nurses on 4B at Victoria General Hospital for their compassion and kindness.
Funeral Service will be held in McCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson & Vancouver Streets, on Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Hatley Memorial Gardens. Donations may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion.
Wilbur “Bill” Mais
January 21, 2010
An era has indeed passed. On January 14, 2010, our dear father entered eternity and into the presence of his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. He was one of a kind and the last family member of his generation. Bill was born to Eustice and Anna Mais on February 19, 1909 in Kingston, Jamaica. He was much loved by his children, his grandchildren, his many nephews and nieces, those he employed who needed a second chance in life, his friends and the marvellous staff at Mount Edward Court (Tannis,Wendy,Brenda, Bill, Maria, Khin, Sam , Colleen, Sabina & others, you know who you are) who cared for him as they would their own family. It’s true, there are angels on earth. Blessed with an entrepreneurial spirit, Bill went into business and opened Mais Electric in the early 1950’s. As his business prospered, he expanded into furniture and appliances, eventually selling the electrical contracting arm. He changed the name to Mais Furniture and Appliances and opened additional stores in Duncan and Ladysmith. After a long and successful career, he retired in 1975. Water baptized at 79 and arm wrestling his grandson to a draw at 95, he will be lovingly missed and remembered always by his daughter Diana (Nyna) Gillis (Mark); sons, Chris (Alice) and Larry (Nellie); grandchildren, Donovan, Danny, Joel and Alysha and great grandchildren, Dee and Aly. An Interment Service will be held at Royal Oak Burial Park on Monday, February 1st at 1:00 p.m. and a Memorial Service on Thursday, April 8th at l:00 p.m. at Emmanuel Baptist Church. Flowers are nice, but a donation to a Haitian relief fund of your choice is better. “And just at the moment when someone at my side says “There he is gone”, there are other eyes watching and other voices ready to take up the glad shout: ” Here he comes” and that is dying – H. Van Dyke.
