JOHNSTON, Patricia Agnes (nee Cockell), born August 25, 1915 in Sydney Nova Scotia. Widow of Laurance P. Johnston, and survived by loving sons, Philip (Sharon), Brentwood Bay, Richard (Pat), Nanaimo; grandsons Michael (Tricia), David (Trish), Paul (Catherine), Christopher (Darla); great grand-daughters Cassidy, Amy, Hayley, Macy, Kelsey; great grand-sons, Tyson, Spencer, Colton; step-grand daughter Dina Ballance and step-grandson Dale Ballance; nephew Alan Cockell (Stephanie) Ottawa, nieces Jeanie Cockell(Joan) Halifax and Joan Cockell-Eaton (Doug) North Vancouver; Victoria sister-in-law Flora Johnston, nieces Donna (Bill) Stevens and Juanita (Jim) Rattray, and many wonderful family friends: especially Hilda Irish, the Lund family, and Lucien (Sieglinde) Van den Eycken, Wilskerke Belgium.

A Celebration of Life and Memorial Tea will be held at McCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson and Vancouver Streets on Sunday, July 26, 2009 at 3:00 pm. Flowers gratefully declined.

Passed away July 17, 2009, in hospital after a short illness. Predeceased by her loving parents, Roy Archibald and Katherine Mary (nee Keeble); survived by two sisters, Mary and Katherine and brother, Roy. She will also be missed by her friend, Gareth Alan Mayhew. Born in Victoria, she lived on Quadra Island for several years before returning to Victoria. Anne was an active member of several social service organizations. She was the founder of the St. Andrew Chapter of the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace, an early director of the Fairfield Community Association, a founder and publisher of the Fairfield Community Press, a founding director of the Waterside Housing Co-op, and a founding director of the Friends of Beacon Hill Park. Gentle Anne had many friends among cats, raccoons, crows, seagulls, and other birds.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Jean Baptiste, 301 Richmond Avenue, on Thursday, July 23, 2009 at 12:00 Noon. Interment will follow in the family plot at Ross Bay Cemetery.

Joan Kathleen Kenning

Joan Kathleen (nee Graham) passed away peacefully, after a long and happy life, in the early evening of July 13th, 2009 at Parkwood Court in Victoria, B.C. She was predeceased by her loving husband (of 59 years), Angus and is survived by their son, Brian (Jill); grandchildren, Stephen and Caroline; brother, Colin (Sylvia); brother-in-law, Ian (Margaret) and cousins, Ann Nation (George) and Gill Nelles. Born in Vancouver, B.C. on February 28th, 1919, “Joannie” always fondly remembered her early years with her cousins and many school friends attending Crofton House School and Bishop Strachan School in Toronto. Joannie travelled in Europe after finishing school in Brussels, Belgium. A life long passion for ballet brought her back to Vancouver and then on to New York where she had wonderful memories of dancing with the Metropolitan Opera and Ballet Company. The pull of family and friends brought her back to B.C. and she began residing in Victoria and working for her father, the well known and respected, Dr. Colin Graham (Kathleen). It was there that she met Angus, who was briefly home on leave from the Navy. They married after the war. Joannie had a long life as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Boating with family and friends and volunteering for many worthy organizations all combined for a full and rewarding life. Joannie will be deeply missed by her family, relatives and many friends and will always be remembered for her kindness, concern for others, cheerful warmth and ever-present smile. The family would like to extend sincere thanks to her wonderful caregivers, Pat and Yolanda; the staff at Carlton House and Parkwood Court, Dr. Ted Rosenberg, Anne, and Vikki. They all worked so hard to make the final period of Joannie’s life as comfortable and peaceful as possible.

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, August 18th, 2009 in the Lady Chapel, Christ Church Cathedral, Victoria, B.C. at 2:00 p.m. A short reception at the church will follow. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the B.C. Cancer Foundation or the Heart and Stroke Foundation , B.C. and Yukon Division.

Roy Lloyd Lister

Born July 4th 1931 in Vancouver, B.C. and passed away July 15th 2009 at Victoria Hospice.

He was the 7th of a 8 children family which relocated to Victoria in the early 1930′s. He completed his Grade 12 at St. Louis’ College in Victoria and moved on to Teacher’s College and pursued a very gratifying career in education. His teaching career began in 1951 at South Wellington, (Nanaimo), proceeded to Campbell River and finally transitioned to Victoria where he taught, then became Vice-Principal at Sir James Douglas Elementary. He subsequently assumed a role at the Greater Victoria School Board as Supervisor of Instruction and finally retired as the Director of Curriculum in 1986.His career as an educator spanned a 36 year period. By various accounts he was one of the best liked and well respected administrators of his day.

He was a life long avid gardener, and upon retirement devoted more time to his family, gardening and various organizations such as Knights of Columbus, Swan Lake-Christmas Hill Nature Centre, and Queen Alexander Hospital. He even managed to combine his love of gardening and dedication to charitable work by potting plants every spring and raising money by their sale for Birthright (single mothers in need).

He met Bernadine (nee Davis) and they married in 1956. As spouses of over 52 years, they raised 5 children of their own, and became very proud grand-parents of five lovely grandchildren. At the age of 78 he was the last surviving member of his siblings. He leaves behind his loving wife, Bernadine; and children, Mark (Kerry), David (Janet), Michele, Blair (Rita),and Loranne; grandchildren, Kathryn Natalie, Evan, Eric and Davis.

He will always be remembered by his family and friends as a proponent of improved education, a gentleman and a genuinely GOOD man.
The family would like to thank the Victoria Cancer Clinic, the Team at Victoria Hospice and all physicians involved for their outstanding loving care of Roy.

Memorial service for Roy will be held at ST. PATRICK’S PARISH, 2060 Haultain street on Saturday, July 25, 12:10 pm. Reception to follow in the church’s hall adjacent to the church.

Joseph Marcial Didier

Joe was born January 18, 1942 in Rose Valley, Saskatchewan. He died suddenly at home at the age of 67.

He is survived by his wife, Carole; son, Marcial (Pam) and grandsons, Kiefer and Darien.

He was predeceased by his mother, Mary (Burtynski) Didier; his father, Marcial Antoine Didier; sister, Jeanice Marie (Didier) Hart and brother-in-law, Ken Hart.

Very recently retired, Joe and Carole were involved in the retail industry for 40 years with multiple stores in Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. Their corporation, Indigo Developments Ltd., developed and operated 8 different stores at Hillside Shopping Centre during the 35 years as a tenant there.
Joe spent many fun filled and rewarding years as a member of the Sales and Marketing Executives of Victoria. He was elected as President of the local chapter in 1986 and then went on to serve on the International Board. Many lifelong friendships were developed while a member of this vibrant group.
Joe was a talented public speaker and received multiple awards during the time he attended Toastmasters.
Although the Didier family moved from Regina to Victoria in 1974, Joe remained a dedicated Rider fan and celebrated Grey Cup for 32 consecutive years with the same group of loyal friends, most particularly Ed and Suzanne Sjostrand.
He travelled extensively with his wife Carole and her parents, Roy and Alice Whitely but his favorite spot to visit was Tofino. He would drive there several times a year accompanied by his friend, Pat Bolen. The two of them loved to spend time sitting on the beach, roasting hot dogs, and solving the problems of the world. He also enjoyed going to Bellingham and meeting up with Al Ruskin where they would spend the weekend dining at fine restaurants and discussing business.

A Memorial Service will be held in MCCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson & Vancouver Streets, on Friday, July 24, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with a reception to follow in the McCall’s Family Centre. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallbros.com.

Isabell Greenhalgh (nee Pinchin)

Our beloved mother and wife, Isabell passed away peacefully on July 15, 2009 at Beckley Farm Lodge after a long, full, and happy life. She leaves behind her loving ing husband, Ted of sixty-five years; son, Barry (Mignonne); daughter, Nancy (Brent); five grandchildren; four great grandchildren and one great-grand-dog. Isabell was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on Oct 22, 1917. While at high school, she was a talented athlete, focusing on running. After graduation, she worked at Eaton’s as an upholsterer and drapery seamstress. Ted and Isabell were married August 11, 1943 after Ted had graduated from Emanuel Ministerial College. Their first posting was to Paynton, Saskatchewan where they started their lives together in service to the Lord. Family and parish life were always a focus for Isabell, as she worked behind the scenes hosting and supporting family and friends. Isabell had numerous hobbies including handicrafts, sewing, piano, baking for family and church and community service. She was a very active member of the Order of the Eastern Star, going on to become Worthy Matron of Ruth Chapter 22 in 1975. In later years, you could find Isabell sitting in front of the fire, with her wonderful dog, Max, doing her word find puzzles and knitting slippers. There were never any cold feet at the Greenhalghs! Her faith in the Lord carried her through all the tough times in her life. Isabell is at peace in the arms of Our Lord where the pains of this life will be no more.

Isabell’s funeral will be held at Christ Church Cathedral, Victoria BC, on Monday, July 20, 2009 at 2.00 pm. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Mom’s name to the Beckley Farm Lodge. Our Family would like to thank all the Staff at Beckley Farm for their devotion, love and kindness to Mom.

November 6, 1958 – July 13, 2009

Our beloved Ann passed away peacefully at Victoria Hospice, surrounded by her loved ones on July 13, 2009. She is survived by her loving parents, Norma and Stewart Gibson; her devoted husband and eternal friend, Erwin; her two beloved children, Monica and David; sister, Mary; brother, Robert and families. Ann was predeceased by her brother, Douglas.

Ann was born in Stephenville, Newfoundland but grew up in Dollard-des-Ormeaux – Montreal. She ventured to Calgary in 1975, where she met and married Erwin. In 1985 Edmonton became her home before moving to Victoria, which has been home since 1995.

“Annie” loved everything about living on “the Rock” (Victoria) and would often be heard saying she constantly felt like a tourist in Victoria. Her love for family, friends and life was passionate and she will be greatly missed. In the words of her favorite musical group “She is buying the stairway to heaven”.

Friends are asked to join with the family to celebrate Ann’s life at CHRIST CHURCH CATHDERAL, Quadra and Courtney Streets on Thursday, July 23, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. The Very Reverend Logan McMenamie officiating. Sadly and unexpectedly, Mom was carried to her Lord on angels’ wings. The whole of Mom’s life was focused on her family. She loved to laugh and had no hesitation in laughing at herself. Mom loved and will be missed by her children Russ, Pat, Barb Alexander, Mick, Keri and Kate. Also by her grandchildren Heather (Darren), Lara, Tara, Jordan and Morgan and her great-grandchildren Rowan, Tristan, Kerry, Graeme and Sean.

Mom had a tender place in her heart for all animals and embraced the menagerie of pets that “followed us home”. Her Yorkie, “Sarah”, was her constant companion and the source of so much comfort.

Rejoining loved ones who have gone before she is with her Lord. Beautiful inside and out, Mom you are forever our guardian angel.

Mom’s memory will be celebrated at a prayer vigil Thursday, July 16th at 7 p.m. at McCall Bros. Funeral Home, Johnson & Vancouver Streets as well as at a church service and mass Friday, July 17th at 2 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 4040 Nelthorpe St., Victoria, BC. Courtyard reception at the church will follow.

Zoya Firtel reposed peacefully and unexpectedly in her sleep in the early morning hours of Friday, July 10, 2009, at Luther Court in Victoria, BC.

Born August 13, 1919 in Almaty, Russia, to Stepan and Zofia Zhakvodistov. In 1945 she married and emigrated, eventually settling in Toronto and then retiring to Victoria in 1978. Predeceased by her husband Joseph, her son Valéry, and her son Max, she leaves a wealth of memories to her son Phillip (Nori), granddaughter Anna, great-grandsons Nathaniel and Alexander, as well as relatives in Ontario and Vancouver, and her many friends in Victoria.

Thanks to the caring people at Mt. Tolmie, Luther Court, St. Sophia Orthodox Church, and McCall’s.
A Pannykhida service will be held at 7:30 pm Wednesday, July 15, and a Funeral service at 10:30 am Thursday, July 16, both at St. Sophia Orthodox Church, 195 Joseph Street, Victoria. There will be a tea at the church following interment at Royal Oak Burial Park.

Donald Ian Nixon

Donald Nixon passed away peacefully on June 29, 2009 after a long illness. He was 75. Predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Mary; he leaves behind his son and the many friends, acquaintances, colleagues and students he got to know during a teaching career that spanned three continents and four decades, in roles that ranged from physics teacher, science department head, and high school principal to university instructor. He was, from his first day to his last, an honest, caring and honorable man, slow to anger, quick to forgiveness, friendly, generous and kind. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, a caring father, a loyal friend, and a gifted educator. He will be missed, always. His son wishes to thank everyone for the comfort and support they have provided during these difficult days.

A memorial celebration of a life well-lived will he held at MCCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson & Vancouver Streets, Victoria, BC, on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at 3:00 pm. Donations may be made to the charity of your choice in lieu of other tributes.
