Stanley Gordon Smith

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather on Sunday, April 26th, 2009. A native son of Victoria, Stan was born Nov 18th, 1940 to Sidney and Dorothy Smith. He attended Cloverdale and Lampson Elementary then Esquimalt High before joining the P.P.C.L.I. and serving overseas in Germany. On his return, he served on the C.N.A.V. Endeavour before joining the B.C. Ferries Corporation where he thrived and enjoyed a successful 35 year career.
Stan is predeceased by his parents and younger brother David. He leaves behind Audrey, his loving wife of 40 years, son Glenn (Mona); his sisters Patricia, Lorraine, and Dianne (Ron); sister in-law Norah; Step-children Ann (Doug), Tom (Karen), Steve (Pat); grandchildren Andrew, Sarah, Steven, Troy, Tanis, Stephanie, and Jennifer; great-grandchildren Ashley, Sophie, Bailey, Jade, and Mya, and numerous nieces and nephews throughout Canada and the U.S. He will be missed by his “army buddy” Dennis, close friend Rick, his poker buddies Roy, Des, Gary, and John, and all his former colleagues at B.C. Ferries.
Many thanks for the care and special attention given by the nursing staff at the Peninsula Health Centre, the volunteer drivers at Beacon Community Services, the attending paramedic crew, and the Sidney R.C.M.P. Special thanks to his physician Brian Winsby, for his years of care and friendship.
Those wishing to pay their last respects are invited to attend a visitation on Monday, May 4th from 6:00 pm to 8:30pm at McCall Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1400 Vancouver St., Victoria, B.C. A celebration of Stan’s life for family and friends will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to a charity of choice.

Robert McDonald Adams

Dr. Robert McDonald Adams, of Sidney, BC, passed away peacefully at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital in his 81st year. Born and raised in London, Ontario, Robert was predeceased by parents Leon Adams and Mildred (nee Waldock). He is deeply missed by his loving partner Susan Lui, son Christopher and daughter Laura, his sister Joan, brothers Dr. Kenneth Adams (Isabel) and Dr. Paul Adams (Velma), and numerous nieces and nephews. He is survived by his ex-spouses Gerda (Strauch), Victoria (Midence).

Robert received his Honors B.A. in Economics and Political Science from the University of Western Ontario in 1951 and an M.A. in Economics from Queens University in 1953. He was the recipient of The Hudson’s Bay Company Scholarship in Economics and Business and the Canadian Social Science Research Council Fellowship for study at the London School of Economics and the University of Chicago, respectively. While completing his doctorate in Labour Economics, he procured a position as Economist and Industrial Relations Specialist with Canadian Industries Limited in Montreal. In 1958, he relocated to Ottawa where he embarked upon a distinguished career with the Public Service of Canada. He served his country in many capacities including the Department of Labour, the Canadian Embassy in Brussels and the Treasury Board in Ottawa. From 1969 to 1973, he served as the Assistant Deputy Minister of Manpower and Immigration where he directed the Canadian Government’s Immigration Program. He was appointed as the Consul General of Canada in San Francisco from 1973 to 1977. This was followed by seven years at McGill University in Montreal as an Associate Professor of Industrial Relations and Director of the Industrial Relations Centre. During his time at McGill, he advised foreign corporations on applications to the Canadian Government’s Foreign Investment Review Agency and was a consultant with the Bank of Montreal’s Public Affairs Department.

In 1989, Robert retired to Sidney by the Sea, located on the Saanich Peninsula. His love for the area was unquestionable as evidenced by his long, daily walks and the many beautiful photographs he collected and shared. His passion for classical music led to serving on the Board of Governors for the Victoria Conservatory of Music. He also spent numerous hours speaking at Rotary clubs in several provinces. His family and many friends will miss his intelligence, wisdom and his sense of duty.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital for their efforts and kindness. A special thanks to Dr. Terry Hartrick for his ongoing care and compassion. Clara Evelyn Wilson

WILSON, Clara Evelyn died April 10, 2009 at VGH. She was born May 5, 1915 in Swalwell, Alberta. She was predeceased by her beloved sister, Marion in 2004. A graduate of Oak Bay High School, Victoria College and UVic; she worked as a bookkeeper for the provincial government for many years. She was a long-time member of the Oak Bay United Church, and particularly enjoyed the Friday Fellowship Group. She was also active at the Monterey Community Centre where she played crib and attended photo club meetings. Her family and friends will remember her spirited presence, her commitment and her generosity. A Memorial Service will be held at Oak Bay United Church, 1355 Mitchell Street on Wednesday, May 6th at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oak Bay United Church.

Ross Milton Clark

CLARK, Ross Milton, passed away peacefully at Victoria General Hospital on April 25, 2009. Ross was born in Uxbridge Township, Ontario on August 30, 1925. He will be sadly missed by his loving companion of 10 years, May Chow, her children and grandchildren. He is survived by his son, Ralph, daughter-in-law, Carol, granddaughter, Melanie, grandson, Randy, and great grandchildren and was predeceased by his wife Wanda. Ross lived most of his life in Ontario with his wife and moved to Victoria in 1995. He was a proud veteran who served in the Second World War with the Queen’s Own Rifle of Canada. Ross was a soft spoken and gentle man who loved nature and exploring North America in his camper van with his companion at his side. He was an active participant at the Juan de Fuca Senior Centre and the Hillside Walking Club. Ross’ quick wit and wonderful sense of humour will be missed by all.
A Memorial Service will held at Gateway Baptist Church, 898 Royal Oak Avenue on Friday, May 1, 2009 at 2:00 pm. Thank you to all the wonderful staff at Broadmead Lodge for their kind care over the past year. Beverley Davis (nee McLean)

DAVIS, Beverley (nee McLean) passed away peacefully at Victoria Hospice on Monday, April 27, 2009. Our beautiful Babtsia fell asleep in the Lords arms comforted by her Ukrainian Orthodox Faith at the age of 68 years. Born in 1940 on October 24th in Portage La Prairie, she was predeceased by mother Rose Lezun McLean; father Aubray CL McLean; sister Lorraine Rowan. Survived by her loving husband of 40 years, Richard Davis (Winnipeg); lovingly remembered by son Barry McLean (Calgary); daughter Valarie Bakowski (Victoria); and husband Robert Bakowski; grandchildren Cody McLean, Melayna McLean, Kaitlin McLean, Anne Bakowski and John Bakowski. Beverley was also very close to Auntie Louise Tenzen (Winnipeg) and cousins Billy Didur (Tsawwassen) and Phylis Didur (Waterloo); Brian Tenzen (Winnipeg) and Linda Leonhart (Winnipeg), Sonya Jackson (England); loving mother-in-law Louise Davis (Houston); sister-in-laws Pamela Ratcliffe and Patty McLain (Houston) and nephew Will Rowan (Okotoks). Through her upbringing on the McLean farm in High Bluff, Manitoba, Beverley learned a wonderful work ethic and a love for the land. She will be remembered for being a compassionate nurse, teacher, a caring mother and grandmother whose hands were never idle through the years of dedication to her career and family. Beverley was well respected as a nurse educator and recipient of the Governor General Award, Mensa Member and artist. Always giving…and telling others, “please pass it on, you owe me nothing”, is what Beverley lived by. Special thanks to Dr. MacDougal, the doctors and nurses who cared for our wonderful Babtsia at the Victoria Hospice and special thanks to Val and Bob for making mom comfortable in the family home during her illness.

Prayers will be offered on Wednesday, April 29th at 7:00 pm in McCall Bros. Funeral Chapel, Johnson and Vancouver Street, Victoria, BC. A Funeral service will be held at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. George, 1100 Colville Road, Victoria, BC on Thursday, April 30th at 10:00 am, with Father Charles Baxter officiating. Interment will follow at Royal Oak Burial Park and a reception thereafter at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. George hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. George.

Bryce Edward Collings

COLLINGS, Bryce Edward July 3, 1926 to April 23, 2009, beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Bryce was born in Victoria, BC, and fulfilled his boyhood dream of flight, living an Air Force life of service in Canada and abroad. Bryce saw all parts of the world flying, navigating and teaching flight school. The young family first retired back to Victoria, BC in 1972 where Bryce continued his work in various capacities of government service. He will be greatly missed by his devoted wife Irene of fifty six years, daughter Aurelie (Neil), daughter Aileen (Zbigniew) and son Kevin (Tina), grandchildren Claire (Aurelie), Ethan and Philip (Aileen), Eva, Eila and Emmett (Kevin). Bryce was predeceased by his parents Carl and Edith and his sister Noreen. He is also survived by his dear sister’s daughters, Carlana, Sharon, Kathy and Susan, and many other nieces and nephews. Bryce was known for his keen wit and that special twinkle in his eye wherever there was fun to be had. A memorial service will be held in the chapel at McCall’s Funeral Home, Victoria, BC, on Tuesday April 28th at 2:30 pm. Reception for Bryce will follow at McCall’s. The family asks that you remember Bryce each in your own way.

Phyllis Muriel Hick

April 24, 2009

Born May 23, 1923 in Chungking, China; daughter of William Arthur Hick and Clarissa Phyllis Hick, missionaries to China; passed into the presence of her Lord, April 23, 2009. She leaves behind her brother, Bernard Hick, along with a niece and nephews. Sixty-six years were devoted in training hundreds of students to play the piano. For many years, she served at Central Baptist Church, then in 1977, became one of the founding members of Saanich Baptist Church. In that fledgling work, her talents were well used. In Sunday School, Bible stories were illustrated with charts and flannel graph to the delight of her students. Throughout her life, she was an active ‘prayer warrior’. Her gentle nudging led to building the Education Wing of SBC. For the past two years, she resided at Shannon Oaks, where she received love from both staff and residents. We already miss her but are thankful that she is reunited with her old friend, Dorothy, in the presence of our Lord.

Graveside Service will be held at Royal Oak Burial Park on Thursday, April 30, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. Celebration of her life will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Saanich Baptist Church, 4347 Wilkinson Road.

Muriel Yvonne Fennell (nee Atkinson)

Born in Victoria, BC on June 19, 1928 died peacefully on April 22, 2009. Predeceased by her husband Robert in 1981; parents Dynes and Lila and brother Alan Atkinson.
Muriel will be lovingly remembered and missed by her children Robert (Joanne), Bradley and Barbara (Doug); grandchildren Lisa, Jason, Tammy (Nate), Rosie, George (Christel), Courtney (Phil); 19 great grandchildren; brother Wayne Atkinson (Wendy/Dale); Leslie Brown and sons; brother-in-law Bruce (Janice) Fennell; sister-in-law Joyce Palmer and her many family members, friends, neighbors, customers and cats.
A matriarch in the RV industry, Muriel was the owner/operator of Fennell’s Trailer Supplies Ltd., on the Pat Bay Hwy., for 37 years.
A Tea in her memory will be held at 2 p.m., May 15, 2009 at McCall Bros., Johnson & Vancouver St.

Elsa McDowell (nee Krentz)

Elsa McDowell (nee Krentz) died peacefully at Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria, BC on April 21, 2009. In her youth, Elsa was very athletic and especially enjoyed speed skating and softball. Although predeceased by her husband Bob McDowell in 1992, Elsa continued to take pleasure in an active lifestyle. This included membership in several local lodges, weekly bridge and bowling games, and keeping up her green thumb in her backyard garden. Elsa is survived by her daughter Pat (Derek) Howes and grandchildren Julie and Andrew. She will be missed by many family, friends and neighbours. As Elsa was an avid animal lover, we would appreciate that donations be made to Victoria SPCA in lieu of flowers (3150 Napier Lane, Victoria, BC V8T 4V5). A celebration of Elsa’s life will be held at McCall’s Floral Chapel, 1400 Vancouver St, on Tuesday April 28, 2009 at 11am with a reception to follow in McCall’s Family Centre.
