Dallyce Leon Patterson passed away peacefully on March 27, 2009 at St. Charles Manor. She will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by her son Steven Sievers, daughter-in-law Melanie Sievers, grandson Spenser Sievers, niece Victoria Maddox and nephew Michael Everidge.

Born October 9, 1932 in David City Nebraska, Dallyce attended school in San Diego, CA. After an early career in modeling and insurance, Dallyce moved to Victoria in the late 1970’s. Dallyce was predeceased by her beloved husband Jack (John D) Patterson. Dallyce was also predeceased by her parents, George and Jeanette Bosche Nelson, her sister Donna Muckle.

The family wishes to thank the staff of St. Charles Manor for the care, understanding and kindness they have shown to Dallyce. A special thank you to Bill and Linda Martin for the friendship, kindness and emotional support you have provided, and to Angela who brightened Dallyce’s days with outings, treats and smiles.

You will forever be loved, remembered and cherished by all who knew you.

A private Graveside service will be Monday, April 6 at 11 a.m. at Royal Oak Burial Park. A reception will follow at Sequoia Gardens Memorial 4665 Falaise Drive , Victoria B.C.

Mary Patricia “Pat” McCarter

Passed away peacefully at Oak Bay Kiwanis Pavilion on March 30, 2009. Predeceased by her sister, Muriel, she is lovingly remembered by her husband of 64 years, Donal; her children, Bruce (Ruth), John (Keren) and Cathy (Ron) Meyer; three grandchildren, Craig, Emily and Heather; her niece, nephews and extended family.
Born March 6, 1923 in Vancouver, BC, Pat attended UBC graduating in 1944 and enjoyed a her family and teaching pre-school. After spending nearly 25 years in Nanaimo, BC, Pat and Donal moved to Victoria in 1973 until the present.
A funeral service will be held at McCALL BROS. FAMILY CHAPEL, Johnson and Vancouver Streets on Friday, April 3, 2009 at 10:00 am. A reception will follow in McCall’s Family Centre.

Born in Virden Manitoba September 1945, Pat passed away March 28, 2009 after a lengthy battle with diabetes and cancer.
Pat is lovingly remembered by Ken, her husband of more than 39 years, and their daughter Dawn. She will be missed by sisters Norma (Gary) Platford and Phyllis (Ray) Jacobson, sisters-in law Janice (Jim) Cumberland and Susan (Bob) Kolisnyk, as well as special family members, Sigmund Stadnyk, numerous nieces, nephews, and those she has “adopted” over the years. Pat will be missed by family pet, Sammy, who was with her to the last. She was predeceased by her parents Agnes and Joseph Pattinson and infant brothers Donald and Alan.
After graduating from high school, Pat moved to Winnipeg where she worked in various accounting positions. It was there she met Ken through the Presbyterian Church; they married August 23, 1969. In 1970, Pat’s job with A&W brought them to Vancouver. In 1971 she suffered complications from long term diabetes resulting in loss of vision however she continued to work until the birth of her daughter in 1972. Pat fought through adversity and always strived to do her best. Following more job related moves around BC, the family ended up in Victoria in 1979.
After attending college and additional specialized support worker training in Toronto, Pat worked as a Rehabilitation Instructor with CNIB until her retirement in 2004. Since then she spent much of her time volunteering with The Salvation Army. Both through work and The Salvation Army, Pat made many friends who will truly miss her bright courageous spirit and positive outlook on life.
Funeral Service will be conducted from the Salvation Army High Point Church, 949 Fullerton Ave., Victoria BC, on Friday, April 3 at 10:00 am., followed by Interment at Royal Oak Burial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any of the charities important in Pat’s life – CNIB, BC Cancer Society, Victoria Hospice, The Salvation Army – or a charity of your choice.

Passed away March 28, 2009 in Victoria. She was born in New Westminster, BC on October 26, 1973. Karen was predeceased by her father, David Storey and is survived by her husband, Dennis Bonnell; her mother, Lynda Friesen (Jake); her sisters, Terri Storey and Jeannine Darcus; her niece, Jettana and her nephew, Paris. Karen was an artistic person who will be dearly missed by all who loved and knew her.

Bob passed away on Thursday March 26, in the loving arms of his wife and best friend, Pat. He fought a valiant battle against multiple myeloma for over two years. Bob was born in Victoria on January 19, 1936 to Catherine and Emerson Showers; he was a lifelong resident of Oak Bay, attending Willows School and Oak Bay High. Bob was an avid athlete, coach, umpire and armchair observer. He and Pat enjoyed numerous vacations, particularly those involving Parksville, Maui and cruising. He spent 45 years in the floor covering industry. Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Pat; his cherished children, Jack (Sondra) and Don (Allison); his special grandsons, Marc and Eric, his dear brother, Jack (Roz) and his many caring in-laws, nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at 2 pm, Friday, April 3 at McCall Bros. Floral Chapel, Johnson & Vancouver St. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Victoria Hospice Society, 1952 Bay St., Victoria, BC, V8R 1J8, for whom the family is very grateful.

Died at 61 years old on March 24, 2009 at Royal Jubilee Hospital. He lived in Victoria over 20 years and is survived by his brother, Donald and sister-in-law, Adrienne of California; his daughter, Jennifer of Alberta; his nephews, Jason and Alvin of Arizona and his Aunt Jean Dewar of Alberta. Gary was born in Calgary, Alberta on October 5, 1947. He will be buried beside his late parents in Botha, Alberta. Gary will be missed sorely.

Gavin Arthur Kemp, Ph. D.

Dr. Gavin Kemp passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord on March 24th, at the Saanich Peninsula Care Center. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Ruth, and 3 children. Gavin will be missed by son Neil (Patricia) and grandson Alex of Ottawa, his son Leon (Peggy) and granddaughters Bethany, Sarah and Grace of Calgary, and his daughter Catharine (Darryl) and grandchildren Raphael and Evangelina of Victoria. Gavin will also be missed by his two brothers Cpt. Frank (ret.) of Ottawa, and daughter Patricia; and Wally (Adele) of High River, Alberta and their children Martin and Lori.

Gavin was born March 18, 1926 in Olds, Alberta, to Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Kemp. He graduated from Olds Agricultural College in 1947 and graduated from University of Alberta with a B. Sc. in Agriculture in 1951. Gavin married his sweetheart, Ruth Sorensen, from Dickson, Alberta in 1951, and they took up residence in Lethbridge. Dr. Kemp’s entire career (1951 – 1988) was spent at the Lethbridge Agricultural Research Station, other than leave to obtain a PH. D. from U of Minnesota in 1961 and work exchange in England from 1968 to 1969. Gavin is best recognized within scientific circles for the development of cold-temperature tolerant tomatoes, and for upright field beans, which are grown extensively in western Canada today.

Gavin enjoyed many hobbies throughout his life, including photography, wood-working, stamp-collecting, nature-walking, and genealogy. Gavin’s green thumb was renowned, and he was well- known for the beautiful gardens he kept at his own home, and the gardens of St. Augustine’s Anglican Church in Lethbridge. He was always an active participant in community affairs, enjoying many clubs and activities, including the bridge club, Gourmet food club, and the Alberta Institute of Agrologists. Gavin always enjoyed orchestral music, and attended classical performances whenever possible. He was involved with the Anglican Church, in the choir, a licensed lay-reader, and a member of the vestry for many years. Gavin was also heavily involved with Scouting, the Nikka Yuko Garden (Japanese-Canadian Centennial project), including several stints as president, and the River Valley Development Committee in Lethbridge.

Gavin and his wife Ruth retired to Victoria, BC in 1988 where he made many friends, and enjoyed the longer growing season, and the beautiful scenery. In later years Gavin was involved in writing a family history book, advocating against genetically modified organisms, continued with his wood-working, and especially enjoyed his time with Raphael and Evangelina. A Celebration of Life service will be held at St. Peter’s Anglican Church (Lakehill), at 2:00 PM on Monday, April 6th. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Primate’s World Relief Fund.

Margaret Christine MacKay Emmerson

Our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister passed away peacefully at home on March 25, 2009 with her loving family at her bedside.
Born November 14, 1922 in Calgary, she was predeceased by her beloved husband, Ronald (2000); her sister, Elizabeth (2002); and her brother, Hughie (1999). She is survived by her loving and devoted children: Sharon (Mike) Wickware of Victoria, and Gary (Bonnie) Emmerson of Calgary. She was most proud of her four grandchildren, Steven, Brian, Cindy and Nancy; six great grandchildren, Jordan, Aleysha, Hillary, Sabrina, Justin and Phoenix. She is also survived by her sister, Kay Chapman of Vancouver; brother-in-law, Eric Emmerson of Calgary, as well as nieces and nephews.
A loving and devoted wife, mother and sister, she nurtured her family with unconditional love and integrity. She was always kind, generous and non-judgmental. Loved and respected by all who knew her. She shared many life long friendships, especially her wonderful friends in her bridge club. Some of them together over 60 years.
Mom approached her death from cancer the same way she lived her life, with faith, dignity, courage, laughter and surrounded by love.
Margaret served proudly in the RCAF during WWII WD. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star #17, Daughters of the Nile #2 Patrol Unit, The Royal Canadian Legion ex-Service Women 182, and a supporting mem of the Korea Veterans Association of Canada # 27.
Our family gratefully acknowledges her Oncologist Dr. Shelia Soulier for her care and support to our mother always allowing her to be a leading partner in her care to live and die with dignity.
Thank you also to Dr. B. Morrison and Dr. G. Luckhurst; to the Peninsula Home and Community Care Team, Hospice and the Beacon Care workers for their supportive and loving care.

Born Margaret Begg Anderson on August 31, 1911 in Victoria, BC. Margaret died March 25, 2009 at Glenwarren Lodge in Victoria. She will be fondly remembered by her daughter, Joan Young; granddaughters, Dianne Gaudin (Glen), Janet Estes (Jeff), Sandra Cook (John Greci); step-grandson, Philip Young; and great grandchildren, Devin, Zoe, Max and Ben Estes, and Victoria Gaudin.
Margaret attended school in Victoria. After graduation form Victoria High School she took teacher training at the Victoria Normal School which was then located at Craigdarroch Castle. Her lengthy career in education began in the Peace River District where she met and married Joe (Johann) Phillipson who predeceased her in 1998. Margaret was also predeceased by her parents, David and Janet Anderson; and her brothers, David and Frank.

The family wishes to thank the Reminiscence Unit Staff at Sunrise of Victoria for the care they provided during the six years before Margaret moved to Glenwarren Lodge in August 2007. The family also thanks the staff at Glenwarren Lodge for the care, understanding and kindness they have shown to Margaret through the closing stage her “long journey.” Special thanks to Margaret’s companion, Marcella, who brightened her final months with smiles, songs and lots of hugs.
Burial at Royal Oak Burial Park entrusted to McCall Bros. A remembrance gathering will be held at a later date to be announced.

J. Albert Rheaume age 86 died peacefully after a brief illness in Royal Jubilee Hospital on Sunday, March 22, 2009. He is predeceased by his loving wife of 55 years, Mary Louise in 2005. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba June 5, 1922, Albert began work with the Canadian Pacific Railway in January 1941. In 1942 he joined the Military. After his military service, he resumed work with the railway serving in various supervising positions across Eastern and Western Canada. He retired in 1984 in Calgary, AB and moved to Victoria where he kept busy volunteering in different capacities. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for many years. Albert is survived by his daughter, Blanche Reynolds of Victoria; sons, William (Bill) (Arlene) of Banff, Alberta, Richard (Ruby) of Vancouver and Marc (Shannon) of Calgary, Alberta; numerous nephews; nieces and grandchildren and two great grand children. The family thanks the staff at Royal Jubilee Hospital for their compassion and care.
Prayers will be offered at McCall Bros. Floral Chapel, Johnson and Vancouver Streets on Wednesday March 25 at 7:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Andrew’s Cathedral, View and Blanchard Streets on Thursday, March 26 at 12:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Hatley Memorial Gardens.
