Wilfrid Kenneth Wardroper

February 27, 2009

WARDROPER, Wilfrid Kenneth, born January 12, 1922, died February 26, 2009 in Victoria, B.C.. Husband of beloved wife, Nancy, née Wilson (deceased) and sons, Lawrence and Andrew (of Ottawa, Ontario), brother to John Wardroper (London, UK). Ken was born near Duncan and lived in Cowichan Station until 1939 when he joined the Canadian Army upon the outbreak of WWII. He served with the Canadian Scottish Regiment during the Normandy invasion, and the liberation of Holland. He attained the rank of Captain with the regiment and was invalided out of the service when seriously wounded for the second time in April 1945. A lengthy recovery followed, after which he joined the Department of External Affairs as a foreign service officer. He served his country in this capacity for a further 37 years, his last overseas posting being Norway where he held the position of Ambassador. He followed his public service by joining the Council of Canadians, determined to preserve the country and people he loved and led them as interim leader after the resignation of its founder, Mel Hurtig. His career, like his life, was the result of single-minded devotion to those things that mattered the most, his family, and his duty to his country, seeing obstacles as opportunities to achieve great things. He will be greatly missed.
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, March 4th at 10:30 a.m. in MCCALL BROS. FAMILY CHAPEL, Johnson and Vancouver Streets, the Reverend D. Hatfield officiating, followed by a reception in the Family Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.

Edward “Ted” Lloyd Partridge

February 26, 2009

We regret to announce the passing of our father, Ted, in the early evening on February 24th. On his retirement from the RCAF in 1964, Dad moved the family to Victoria, and had been able to independently maintain and live in the family home up until his death. He enjoyed puttering in the yard and always had some project on the go. Born in Prince Albert Saskatchewan, March 8, 1918, Dad felt he had traveled enough in uniform so that he was perfectly content here and rarely ventured beyond Victoria in his retirement. Predeceased by his loving wife Mary May nearly thirty years ago and his two older brothers, Ted leaves a sister, Isabel Colmer, a daughter, Lorna, two sons, Robert (Shelagh) and Alan, seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and his feline friend, Baxter, to mourn his passing. No service by Ted’s request. In lieu of flowers please donate to the SPCA.

Hans Lennart Hornfeldt

February 26, 2009

May 21, 1932 – February 19, 2009

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather. Hans died peacefully, surrounded by his three daughters, Britt-Inger (Philip), Marie-Anne (Rick) and Christine (Dave), and accompanied by the singing of his beloved wife, Gun-Britt. “Morfar” will be deeply missed by his granddaughters Amy (Al), Nikki, Ashley & Sabrina; his grandsons, Shane and Jacob; and his great granddaughter, Peyton. Hans was a devoted and caring husband to the love of his life, Gun-Britt, for over 52 years. He is also survived by his brother Hakan (Britt) Olofsson of Los Angeles.

Hans was born in Ornskoldsvik, Sweden where he was employed in the newspaper business for 16 years before immigrating to Victoria with his family in 1964. After owning a second hand furniture store in Esquimalt for a number of years, he returned to the Times Colonist where he worked as a printer in the composing room until his retirement. Proud of his heritage, Hans formed the Swedish Club in Victoria in 1997, and was an ambassador and host to many visiting Swedish sports teams. After taking up running at the age of 50, Hans ran a total of five marathons, his last being the Stockholm marathon, a life-long dream. Hans lived life to the fullest, parasailing at age 60, and climbing the tallest mountain in Sweden at age 70. He was a longtime member of the Crystal Pool and belonged to the Garden City Wanderers walking club. Hans was an active member of the Victoria community, and volunteered for many local events. The highlight of his Christmas holidays was being “Santa”, an undertaking he loved and treasured for many years. Above all else, Hans cherished his time with family and friends. His wonderful sense of humour and kindness left a lasting impression on all who met him, and he will be greatly missed. A celebration of Hans’ life will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, March 2, 2009 at Glad Tidings Church, 1800 Quadra Street, Victoria, B.C. with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oak Bay Kiwanis Pavilion Foundation, 3034 Cedar Hill, Victoria, B.C. V8T 3J3, where his wife Gun-Britt continues to reside under the loving care of the dedicated staff.

Dr. Howard Alan Guest

February 25, 2009

March 16, 1929 to February 23, 2009

Howard died in the Jubilee Hospital after a lengthy illness. His family is appreciative of the excellent care he received from medical and nursing staff and other caring and capable health care professionals. He was predeceased by his older brother, George who was killed in WW2 and a younger brother, Bill who died five years ago, survived by his widow, Marla.

A very gentle man, Howard will be sorely missed by Sheena, his wife of fifty four years and by his two sons of whom he was very proud; Stuart [Lynne, Lara and Neil] of Edmonton and Donald [Cathy, Phillip and Christopher] of Calgary and by many extended family members and friends. Howard was accepting of others, but held himself to a high standard in all things.

In 1953 on graduation from the Faculty of Medicine at Queen’s University, he spent an internship year in New England where he met his future wife Sheena Stuart, a medical graduate from the University of Glasgow. In June 1954, they were married in Scotland returning to Canada to practice medicine in Winnipeg until retiring in 1987 when they moved to the West Coast.

In retirement Howard found more time to devote to his long standing interest in history and where he formerly jogged, clocking over two thousand miles each year and completing the Winnipeg Marathon in 1980; he now was content to walk his dogs.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to your favourite charity.

A Memorial Service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 28th in MCCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson & Vancouver Streets, Victoria, BC.

The Honourable James John “Hamish” Gow, QC

February 25, 2009

1918 – 2009

We regretfully announce the death of our much loved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather on Monday, February 23, 2009. Born in Aberdeen, Scotland, he spent many happy holidays at Roseneath in Bo’ness, with his beloved granny and his cousins, the Roseneath gang. He attended university for one year before joining the Gordon Highlanders in 1939. With them he embarked for France as part of the British Expeditionary Force. After five years as a prisoner of war, he eventually returned to Aberdeen where he completed his degree in law.
In the years following, and in divers places, he enjoyed teaching, writing about and practising law. This culminated in his appointment first to the County Court of Vancouver Island, and then to the Supreme Court of British Columbia. These were happy years. When, as he saw it, he was thrust untimely from the bench, at the youthful age of 75 years, he rallied and went on to spend another ten years in the practice of law. Law was his passion, and to it he bent the full force of his intellect, learning, compassion and energy, and it, in turn, rewarded him with a fulfilling life.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Edna, min Medina, daughters Fiona (Terry) and Catriona (Rob), grandchildren Madeleine (Dan), Sylvia and Neil and great-grandchildren Brett, Sienna Marie and Heidi Lynne. The family would like to thank the staff at Victoria Hospice for their compassionate care during his final weeks, and the staff of Beacon Home Care, and nurse Darshan, for their kindness and assistance during his final months.
A Service of Remembrance will be conducted by the Reverend Laura Kavanagh in KNOX PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 2964 Richmond Road on Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. followed by a reception. Flowers gratefully declined. If so wished, donations may be made to the Canadian Red Cross, 909 Fairfield Road, Victoria, B.C. V8V3A3, the Victoria Hospice, 1952 Bay Street, Victoria, B.C. V8R 1J8 or a charity of your choice. Hamish never ceased to be thankful to the Red Cross for providing food and other assistance to him and his fellow prisoners during the war; without that assistance he doubted that he would have survived.

Inshallah, we shall meet again.

David Maxwell Weston

February 23, 2009

July 4th, 1946 – February 19th, 2009

Dave quietly passed away at home on Thursday, February 19th, surrounded by his loving family. An extraordinarily creative, passionate, and multi-talented man, he will be deeply missed by his wife Maureen, his sons John (Megan) and Mike, his daugher Jenny, his brother Jim, and many other close relatives and friends. Dave was pre-deceased by his father, Ralph, and mother, Jane. Born in Ottawa in 1946, Dave grew up in a military family and at an early age learned to adjust to several moves across the country as his father pursued a career with the Canadian Air Force. Dave graduated from Oak Bay High School in 1964 and received a Bachelor of Arts (Philosophy) Degree from the University of Ottawa in 1973. Dave moved back to Victoria and began what would be a 33–year career as a social worker with the Ministry of Children and Families, a position that he maintained until his retirement two years ago. A highly principled man, Dave approached his professional life with dedication, integrity, and compassion, qualities that were also very evident in Dave’s private life. His world centered around his family. His love for his children was ignited by a desire to share with them every experience one can imagine; Dave constructed a hydraulic-powered flight simulator in the basement so that the kids could have adventures in space. His love of the ocean led to many wonderful sailing trips with the family. Island exploration, beach camping, and nature photography were typical weekend activities. Throughout his entire life Dave also maintained and nourished a passion for music, rehearsing with the band in his studio every week. Skilled at many instruments, his love was for the electric guitar, which he played until only a few weeks ago.

The family would like to thank Dr. Weinerman and Michael Miller at the Cancer Agency for their compassionate care throughout Dave’s chemo treatments. Special thanks also go to the staff at Victoria Hospice for their incredible support throughout Dave’s illness, and especially during the last week at home. Thanks also to Pam Steneker, community care nurse, for her long-term support.

A celebration of Dave’s life will be held at the McCall Bros. chapel, 1400 Vancouver St., on Saturday, February 28th, at 2:00 pm. A reception will follow. Donations in Dave’s name may be made to either the BC Cancer Agency or the Victoria Hospice Foundation.
