Passed away peacefully at home in Victoria on July 30, 2008 at the age of 105 years. She was born in Ste-Agathe, Manitoba on April 24, 1903. Irene is lovingly remembered by her niece, Margaret Levis of Seattle, Washington and extended family. Special thanks to Dr. Ted Rosenberg and all the caregivers.





Prayers will be offered from MCCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson & Vancouver Streets, at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, August 5, 2008. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from St. Jean Baptiste Church, 301 Richmond Avenue on Wednesday, August 6, 2008 at 11:00 am with a reception to follow in the Church Hall. The Reverend Benoit Laplante to officiate. Interment to follow at Hatley Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jean Baptiste Church.

With heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of our Mom at the age of 94. Predeceased by her husband Mack in 1999, left to mourn are daughter, Marie (Doug); son, Jim (Meg) of Victoria; sisters, Julie Braaten of Kelowna, Marguerite Upton of Calgary and many nieces and nephews. Born in Kipling, Saskatchewan, Mom left home at age 17 to pursue her hairdressing career, meeting her future husband at a convention in Winnipeg in 1939. They were married three months later and lived in Flin Flon, Calgary and finally moved to Victoria in 1955. Beauticians by trade, they owned and operated Beauty Salons in all three cities. In 1969 they opened Stretch and Sew Fabrics which is still family operated. We would like to thank Dr. David Brook and all the staff at Mt. Tolmie for their compassionate care of Mom. Funeral Service will be held in MCCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson and Vancouver Streets, on Thursday, August 7th at 3:00 p.m. A reception will follow in the Family Centre. Friends who wish to make a donation may do so to Mt. Tolmie Hospital or the B.C. Heart and Stroke Foundation.

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Joseph Roy Pogson on July 24, 2008 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. Predeceased by the love of his life, Ruby Elizabeth in 2000, with whom he shared 58 years. He leaves to mourn his loving family, son, Jim (Joan) Pogson; daughters, Carolyn (Chris) Rochon and Judy (Kerry) Firth; grandchildren, Michelle (Kevin) Andersen, Elizabeth (Andrew) Hung, Brad (Wendy) Firth, Mike (Cheryl) Rochon, Treena (Paul) McDonald, Tom Pogson, Mark (Jennifer) Rochon, Laura (Paul) Way; his great-grandchildren, Chris, Stephen, Jason, Jared, Anne, Brandon, Catherine, Charlyn, Grace, Justin, Joshua, Matthew, Ethan, Johnathan, Jacob and Michaela; and nephew Neale Hankins.  Dad graduated from UBC with a degree in Applied Science in Electrical Engineering in 1940 at age 20. He started with BC Electric in Victoria in 1940. He then joined the RCAF and attained the rank of Flight Lieutenant.  Mom and Dad were married in 1942. After the war, Dad resumed his career with BC Electric / BC Hydro. He worked with Hydro for 44 years reaching the position of Electrical Superintendant of the Victoria Branch (South Vancouver Island). While his career was very important to him, the heart of his life was in his home. Dad provided us with a happy and secure upbringing. He was also known for his phenomenal memory. The family wishes to thank the doctors and nursing staff of the RJH Hemodialysis Unit for their care and support during the past three years.



 



A Celebration of Roy’s life will be held at McCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, on Saturday August 2, 2008 at 1:00 pm with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Roy’s memory to VIKPA (Vancouver Island Kidney Patients’ Association), P.O. Box 5145, Postal Stn. Passed away July 25, 2008 in Victoria, BC. She was born in Victoria on June 26, 1928, the only child of Sarah and Martin Mallett. Predeceased by her husband, Ken “Mr. Saanich” Middleton in 2003. Survived by her children, Larry (Tracy), Lynne (Stan Ritz), Lorne (Liz), Leanne and Laureen (Daryl Dagneault); numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and many extended family and friends. Ev was a life long member of the Country Cousins Square Dance Club. She and her husband were awarded the Canadian Square and Round Dance Society Award of Excellence. She was a pioneer resident of Saanich who had a significant contribution in the development of the Coat of Arms for the Corporation of the District of Saanich. Ev was an avid bowler and crafter in her spare time.

Our dear beloved wife, mother, and "Nanny" passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on July 24, 2008 in Victoria. She was born June 22, 1931 in Nanaimo, BC. Predeceased by her sisters, Norah Primeau and Doreen "Jiggs" Milmore; brother, Michael MacDowell; and son-in-law, Brian Kirshfelt; Ann is survived by loving husband, Donald; children, Richard (Carrie), Nancy Kirshfelt, Jenny (Greg) Snead, Andy (Laurie), and Freddy (Patrice); and grandchildren, Erin, Geoff, Lindsay, Amy, Ashley, Savanna, Courtney, Riley, Philip, Shannon, Cole, Travis, and Troy. She is also survived by her sisters, Maire Stewart and Joan MacDowell and her brothers, John (Barbara) and Robin (Kathy) MacDowell. After graduating from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in 1953, Ann married Don and soon became a mother and devoted the rest of her life to her family. The family would like to express their thanks to Dr. Ming, Janine and rest of the nursing staff of Royal 3 Extension at the Royal Jubilee Hospital.

Peacefully on July 5, 2008 at the age of 92 years. He was born in the Cowichan Valley on March 17, 1916 of pioneer parents, Arthur and Dorothy Carus-Wilson Leakey, both originally from England; his sister, Carus Cooper and cousin, Edith Leakey and Honor Guppy. He is survived by his sister, Mona Leakey and cousins, Barbara (Syd) Andrews-Spain, Julia Andrews (Andrew) and her children, Haley, Chelsea and Andrew; his cousin, Dorothy Andrews (Greg); his cousins, the Bazzett family on Vancouver Island and his family in England and Africa. Bob was well known in the Chemainus community, the Cowichan Valley and the Saanich Peninsula. He had a wonderful, dry sense of humour, a sweet personality and was a gentleman respected by all. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. A Graveside Service will be conducted in St. Mary’s Anglican Churchyard, Somenos Road, North of Duncan, on Tuesday, July 29th at 2:00 p.m. by the Reverend Sheila Flynn of St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Maple Bay.

John Clement “Jack” Waldron

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grand father and great-grand father Jack Waldron.


Predeceased by his son John in 1994; Jack is survived by the light of his life, Jacqueline, with whom he shared 61 years. His son David (Lynn) and their children, Dustin, Ashley and great-grandson Isaiah and his daughter Ginny (Joff) Barlow and their children Delaney, Jocelanne and Jack. His grand-daughter, (John’s daughter) Lori(Bruce) and great-grand daughter Miranda. Jack is also survived by his sister-in-law Ethel Waldron and his brother-in-law and best friend Tom Ralph, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.


Jack was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia to William and Barbara Waldron. He moved to Victoria at the age of 6 and grew up in Esquimalt, with his brother Bill and sister Betty and attended Lampson Street School. In 1937, at the age of 17 he joined the RCN as a boy seaman. He proudly served on many destroyers during WWII, advancing to the rank of Chief Petty Officer at the age of 23. He then carried on his career as the Chief Physical Training Instructor at CFB Stadacona and CFB Naden. A tremendous athlete, an avid soccer player and one of the few "A" Squash players on the Pacific Coast, he retired from the RCN in 1962, after 25 years service. He persued a career in Corrections and later Real Estate. He enjoyed his retirement showing & raising Miniature & Toy poodles with his wife and loved trailering and spending time with his grandchildren, whom he adored.


Jack was a "class act" all the way to the end. He loved and cared deeply for his family like no other and was a true gentleman to all who knew him. Our family would like to give our heartfelt thanks to Dr.Brock Fraser and Donna and the home support nursing network for taking such great care of him. His RCA’s Pat, Rhonda, Arliss and Lily for making his last days bearable and to Deborah for making his garden lovely and our Judy for making his home beautiful. Our deepest gratitude to Kristina, Hospice RN, for enabling him to complete his journey with dignity, surround by love.


In lieu of service, the family will be having a open house to celebrate Jack’s life, at the family home, 3505 Promenade Crescent, Victoria on Tuesday, July 29 from 1-4 pm.

Margaret Jane Moore (nee Horne)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Margie on Sunday, July 20th after a valiant fight with brain cancer. She faced the difficult journey with courage and dignity for over two years.



She will be forever missed and lovingly remembered by her devoted husband Joe and their family – son Kevin (Joanna, grandchildren Laura, Maggie, Christopher, and Peter) and daughters Marilyn (Rob, grandchildren Keegan, Jane, and Finley) and Denise (Lou). Margie will also be dearly missed by her sister Pat and brother John, as well as extended family and many, many caring friends.



Margie was born in Victoria on January 31", 1938 to Jack and Doris Horne. She was baptized, confirmed, and married at Christ Church Cathedral, and was also a bell ringer during her teens and twenties. Margie and Joe had their first date at the Vic High Homecoming Dance in 1955. They celebrated their forty-seventh wedding anniversary on July 8th.



Margie was an integral part of the Cordova Bay community, volunteered countless hours to many worthwhile causes, and enriched the lives of all who knew her. Margie delighted in her role as a stay-at-home mom and later as a loving, active grandmother.



A heartfelt thank-you to all the wonderful staff and volunteers at the Palliative Care Unit of Saanich Peninsula Hospital for their compassionate care and devotion to Margie during her final months.



In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Palliative Care Unit at Saanich Peninsula Hospital.
