Michael James McCahill

Suddenly at home on June 18, 2008, age 82.
Predeceased by his parents, James and Vivian (nee Matthews); former wife, Sally, and several members of the Tyson, Pottinger, Humber clan. He was from long-time Victoria families on both sides. Great grandparents, John and Mary Anne Matthews homesteaded in the Island View Beach area, grandparents, Ambrose and Ellen Matthews were well-known and lived on Quadra near Hillside. Grandparents, Captain Michael and Helen McCahill lived in the Hillside/Bridge St. area for many years and were active in the Odd Fellows/Rebekah Lodges.
Mike attended Burnside Elementary, Central Jr. and Victoria High School, and the Victoria College in Craigdarroch Castle. After a short break in the Army, he returned to education earning his BA at UBC, his BLSc at University of Toronto and later Advanced Computers at the same university.
After receiving his BA, he travelled a year exploring Britain and parts of Northern Europe. Returning to Canada with his bride Sally, he earned his BLSc at the University of Toronto then worked inVictoria at the Greater Victoria Public Library and later at Uvic. He later worked at Sir George Williams University in Montreal and spent most of his career at Robarts Library at the University of Toronto. He played a major role in establishing the computer cataloguing system that replaced the overloaded existing system. He excelled and was well-respected in his field and will be missed by all.
Michael is survived by his sister, Mavis McCahill; cousins, Laurie McKay (nee Matthews), Craig and Randel Matthews, and their families, many other relatives and a great many friends.
After many cold winters and sizzling summers in Toronto, Mike returned to his beloved Victoria in 1986, and was able to enjoy over 20 years doing what he enjoyed – being involved in politics, volunteering for various organizations, attending the opera and ballet, collecting books and music, lunching with friends and family, and travelling. He was also a really great brother!
A celebration on Michael’s life will be held at McCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson and Vancouver Streets on Monday, June 30, 2008 at 2:30pm. A reception will follow in McCall’s Family Centre.

With great sadness the family of Olga announces her passing after a courageous battle with leukemia. She will be forever remembered for her strength, humour and passion for life. Her motherly embrace touched everyone she knew in her own special way.
Olga is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Camilla and Edith (Danny); and her grandsons, Joseph and Andrew.
A grateful thank you from Olga and her family to Dr. Donna Cuthbert and all the nurses at the Royal Jubilee Hospital.
Prayers will be offered at McCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson and Vancouver Streets on Wednesday, July 2, 2008 at 7:00 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at ST. JOSEPH THE WORKER PARISH, 785 West Burnside Rd., on Thursday, July 3, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Royal Oak Burial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Leukemia Research or to a charity of ones choice.
Christopher (Chris) Brian Orme

Chris passed away suddenly on June 20, 2008 peacefully at home. Born in Victoria on January 3, 1954, Chris is pre-deceased by his father (Eric), brother (Mark), and step-mother (Joan). Chris leaves his mom (Una), brothers Larry (Kathy), John (Mary), sister Vicky (Harry), step-sister Leslie (Terry), and many other relatives and friends.
Chris lived with schizophrenia since his late teens and always dealt well with the challenges it presented. Chris led a busy and fulfilling life. In recent years he was involved in gardening and volunteered at the Mustard Seed Food Bank where he put his cooking skills to work. He will be remembered as intelligent and witty – but most importantly, as an extremely kind and gentle soul.
A Memorial service to celebrate Chris will be held at McCall Bros. Floral Chapel, Vancouver & Johnson Street, Victoria, BC at 2:00 pm on Friday, July 4. Service will be led by Father Antonio Osorio as per the wishes of Chris and his family. If so desired, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Schizophrenia Society-Victoria Branch,941 Kings Road, Victoria BC, V8T 1W7 or the Mustard Seed Food Bank, 625 Queens Avenue, Victoria BC, V8T 1L9.

Phillis Helen Warren (nee Clarke)

Born August 26, 1910 passed away June 23, 2008 at Resthaven Lodge, Sidney, BC. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert in 1982. Their last home was by the ocean near Miracle Beach and she returned to Victoria following his death.
She will be missed and is remembered as a sweet kind lady by her sons, Gerry (Verna) Warren, Bill (Karen) Warren, and former daughter in law Elly, 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Phillis was born in Winnipeg but moved to Salmon Arm, BC as an infant with her parents Alan and Charlotte Clarke, he was a traveling salesman for a flour company. The family later moved to Mission where he operated a small store and then to Victoria where they operated a grocery store in Fairfield. She was an only child and loved to visit the big city, Vancouver with her mother.
In the early 30′s she met her husband-to-be Robert, when they were choir members at Fairfield United Church, but due to the insecurity of the depression they did not marry until 1939. While raising a family she sang in the St Paul’s Anglican Church and in the Linden Singers choirs. Her musical voice remained until near the end.
She participated in Seniors groups in Black Creek and on return to Victoria in 1983 she was active in the Fairfield Seniors Activity Group. She enjoyed nature and the outdoors spending many hours fishing with her husband, she rowing from the family boathouse "Woodsea" at Cole Bay, Saanich Inlet .
A family gathering will be held Sunday, July 6th, 1-4 PM in her remembrance at Gerry’s home, 8650 Ebor Terrace, North Saanich.
Special thanks to the care givers and staff at Resthaven Lodge where she lived for the past 3 years.
Wilfred Chan

On June 21st, Wilfred passed away peacefully at The Kiwanis Pavilion in Victoria with his wife of 51 years, Mary, at his side. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed by Mary, sons Derrick (Rosenne) and Russell (Sally), grandchildren Marlise, Tanis, Ryan, Devon and Madelyn, step-mother Yuen Yee, brothers George (Lillian), Gilbert (Dorothy), James (Bev), Paul (May), Alfred, William (Gerry), sisters Noreen and Loretta (Ken), and many nieces and nephews.
Wilfred was born and raised in Victoria, BC. He worked many years at Canadian Freightways until he retired in 1990. Wilfred and Mary traveled and cruised to many places around the world. Wilfred was an avid golfer and member of Gorge Vale. He loved to fish and spend time in his garden growing vegetables for friends and family.
The family would like to offer their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Michael Mawdsley and the staff at The Kiwanis Pavilion for their kindness, care and support.
Friends may pay their respects at McCall Bros. Funeral Home on Thursday, June 26th from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Funeral Service will be conducted from MCCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson and Vancouver Streets on Friday, June 27th at 1:00 p.m. followed by interment at Royal Oak Burial Park.

Anthony Frank Grimston

Passed away on June 20, 2008 with his son and daughter at his side. Born in Victoria on May 17, 1920. Tony was predeceased by his beloved wife, Freda of 37 years and is survived by his son, Michael (Laury); daughter, Joanne Fraser (Bill); grandchildren, Cameron, Dale, Jordan and Meaghan and his sister, Pam Kirchin. Tony served in the Royal Canadian Corps. of Signals during WWII. He was in the Battle for Hong Kong and taken prisoner on Christmas Day 1941 and spent 44 months as a Japanese PoW. After Liberation, Tony returned to Victoria and was employed by the Department of National Defence as Chief Personnel Administrator, CFB Esquimalt. He retired in 1978. After retirement Tony and Freda enjoyed many good years together travelling until her passing in 1987. Tony had a passion for gardening and loved fishing with his buddies. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be dearly missed by all who loved and knew him. The family would like to offer their heartfelt thanks to all the staff at The Lodge at Broadmead for their devoted care and support, especially to Randy Murdock, dad’s friend, close companion and advocate over the past three years. Passed away peacefully June 19, 2008 in Victoria BC. She was born August 8, 1914 in Grand Forks, BC.Predeceased by her husband, Morley; parents, Andrew and Mary Kleman; brothers, John and Stephen Kleman; sisters, Margaret McDougall, Josephine Neveroski, Julie Johnson, Helen Hewitt, and Anna Kleman.She is survived by sister, Katherine Brown; numerous nieces; nephews; grand-nieces and grand-nephews as well as many other family members and friends. A resident of Victoria for 30 years, she previously travelled and resided in various places in Western Canada and the far north.
An avid lover of nature, she expressed herself and talents in many ways, through her art, music, and writing. She will be remembered for her smile and gracious ways and will be missed by all who knew her.
Prayers to be held at 7:30 pm on Sunday, June 22, 2008 at McCall Bros. Funeral Home, Johnson & Vancouver Streets. Phyllis Evelyn (nee Deeble) passed away peacefully on Monday, June 16, 2008 at the Victoria General Hospital. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Earl in 1999 and her beloved son, Peter in 1947. She was a devoted mother and deeply loved by her children, Dawn (Norm) Davidson, Cathy Awalt, Joanne Denniston, David (Ada) Sarsiat; 9 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 4 sisters one brother and many nieces and nephews and their families.
“You will always be in our hearts.”
Phyllis always enjoyed having her family around her, walking in the woods and at the beach and being a longtime member of Eastern Star and The Women’s Auxilary at St. Paul’s Anglican Church. We would like to extend a special thanks for the wonderful homecare workers from Beacon (Juan de Fuca) Homecare and the caring staff at VGH 6D North.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, 1379 Esquimalt Road, Victoria, BC at 2:00 pm on Thursday, July 3, 2008 with Cannon Andrew Gates officiating. Patricia (Yvonne) Turner

It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of our loving mother after a lengthy illness. Predeceased by her husband, Duncan in 1993 and her sister Gloria in 2004, she is survived by her daughters Susan (Warren) Painter, Gail Morck, sons Mike (Janis), Rick (Barb), Brian, eight grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, sister Catherine McFadyen and many nieces, nephews and friends. Mom was born and raised in Qualicum Beach, as some of the early settlers there, before moving to Victoria to work for the Hudson’s Bay Company. She married Dunc in 1945 and they raised their children in Qualicum, Nanaimo and then Victoria where she continued her working career as a long-time employee at Old Morris Tobacconists, retiring in 1989. Our family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the Geriatric Assessment Unit of Victoria General Hospital for their care and patience our mother received, as well as the staff at Beckley Farm Lodge during her short stay there. Also a special thank you to our brother Brian, who faithfully looked after Mom during her last few years. Mom’s wish was that there be no service, but a private family gathering for a "cup of tea", which will be held at a later date. Donations can be made to the charity of your choice.

Passed away peacefully at his home with his family by his side, after a long and courageous battle with Mesothelioma Cancer. Geoff is survived by his loving wife, Sandra; sons, Stephen (Jennifer), Geoffrey (Jaunita); daughter, Angela; grandchildren, Michael (Tanya), Brittany, Anthony, Nicole, James; and great-granddaughter, Megan. He will be sadly missed by all. The family would like to thank everyone for their support and kindness. Our acknowledgement for the wonderful care Geoff received from Dr. Helen Anderson, Dr. Lim, Dr. Seager, Dr. Kirk, Dr. Black and many doctors and staff at the Cancer Clinic and Hospice and The P.R.T. Team for their support. Many thanks for the wonderful care from all the nurses at Saanich Peninsula Nursing Care especially, Karen, Lisa and Heather, our home care nurse.
