BROWN, Margaret Jessie “Peggy” – It is with great sadness that we announce that after a brief illness, Peggy passed away at the Royal Jubilee Hospital on February 27, 2004. She is lovingly remembered by her husband, David Allyn; daughters, Melanie (John) Wakelin, Jennifer Brown (Clive Flatau) and Lori (Ray) Ralph; grandchildren, Christopher and Daniel Ralph, Evan and Rita Wakelin, and Matika Flatau; sister, Joan (Jim) Costello; as well as her extended family.

Peggy was born in Chemainus, BC, on April 9, 1937. She graduated from the School of Nursing, Royal Jubilee Hospital in 1958 and served for nearly 40 years, primarily working in the Emergency Department.

Special thanks to the staff of the Royal Jubilee Hospital, RP1 and the Cancer Agency for their kindness.

A service of remembrance will be held at McCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson and Vancouver Streets on Friday, March 5, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. A reception will follow in the Graham and Torrey McCall Family Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Marjorie Kae Stewart

STEWART Marjorie K., on February 23, 2004. Marjorie was born in Atlin, B.C. on October 29, 1927 to Dr. Reginald and Edna Wride. Following her father’s service in World War II, the family relocated to Victoria where Marjorie lived until her passing. As a young adult, Marjorie was active in the Royal Victoria Yacht Club and in later years, enjoyed learning and teaching dog obedience training. She leaves her husband Alex and her daughters Carolyn Davidson and Wendy Stewart. She also leaves two granddaughters and one great granddaughter. No service by request.

Frederick William Smith

SMITH, Frederick William – It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of Fred; a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.

He was born December 13, 1925 in Camrose, Alberta. After a courageous battle with Emphysema, Fred passed away at the Royal Jubilee Hospital on February 23, 2004 surrounded by his family.

He will be lovingly missed by his wife of 53 years, Patricia; daughter, Gaylan and son-in-law, Terry, granddaughter, Olivia; daughter, Jo-anne and grandsons, Christopher and Tristan; brother, James and wife, Evelyn; and his many relatives and friends.

In 1946 in Victoria, he met his lifelong companion, Pat. Later he became a glassblower for Bayliss Neon where he began to learn the Neon Sign Business.

In 1958 he moved with his family to Vancouver where he joined Neon Products. He enjoyed a successful career in sales.

Throughout the years he became a respected leader in the North American Sign Industry. Fred retired in 1988 as the Executive Vice President and Manager of the Jim Pattison Sign Company.

In 1990 Fred and Pat retired to Victoria where they enjoyed many happy retirement years.

Fred will be especially remembered for his hard work ethic, strong opinions, sense of humour and his ability to give those he loved the feeling that he would always protect and take care of them.

Special thanks to Dr. D. Yam and Dr. E. Gough and the kind hospital staff.

There will be a celebration of his life for family and friends at SEQUOIA GARDENS MEMORIAL, 4665 Falaise Dr. on Friday, February 27, 2004 at 2:30 p.m. A reception will follow at Sequoia Gardens Memorial.

DABIELSKI, Zofia (Sophie) – Our beloved Sophie passed away peacefully on February 21, 2004. Sophie was born in Poland and after lengthy travels during the years of WWII, arrived in Canada in 1949. She settled in Victoria and there met her husband of 52 years, Tad. Sophie lived an interesting and full life, touching the lives and hearts of many in her community. In January 2002 Sophie and Tad celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with many family and friends.

Sophie was a true lady, loved by everyone. She will be missed by her entire family especially husband Tad, her son Mark, daughter-in-law Nadia and grandson Kiel. She leaves behind three sisters; Krystina, Marie and Anna along with many nieces and nephews, or as she affectionately named them: “cousins by the dozens”.

The family would like to especially thank the staff at Victoria Hospice for their care and support in the last hours as well as the ongoing care of Drs. H. Wass and R. McDonald. Appreciation to the Juan de Fuca Home Support care team for their assistance to Sophie and Tad during the past few weeks.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Victoria Hospice Society in Sophie’s name.

A Funeral Service will be held at SACRED HEART CHURCH on Friday, February 27, 2004 at 10:30am with reception to follow.

WEATHERDON, Verna Jean (Nee Demers) – Verna, born December 27, 1922 in Ottawa, Ontario passed away at Central Park Lodge, Glenwarren, Victoria, BC on February 22, 2004 at age 81. Predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Bert (John) Weatherdon on Oct. 27, 1991 and their eldest son, Keith on August 6, 1979.

Survived by her daughter, Beth (Tom) Pengelly, N. Delta, BC; and son, Brian (Virginia), Burlington, Ontario; grandchildren, Rob (Wendy) and Craig (Lena) Pengelly, Lou (Mike) Fluri, James, Nathan, Bethany and Sarah Weatherdon; seven great grandchildren, Danielle, Dustin, Bryce, Tristan, Brandan, Kaija and Lina; sisters, Dot Inglis, Calgary, Alberta, Edith Smith and Edna Shedden, Ottawa, Ontario; many other loving family members and dear friends.

Verna has been a devoted member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Victoria, BC since 1955, also a past member of Canadian Power and Sail Squadron (having attained Advanced Piloting), Capital City Yacht Club, and a past volunteer at the Victoria Stroke Club.

Special thanks to Dr. Jane Wright, Dr. Coetze and to all the staff at CPL-Glenwarren for your competent, professional and empathic care given to Verna since January 14, 1999. Although it is your job, you give of yourselves in the care that you provide.

Memorial service will be held to honour Verna’s life at ST. ANDREW’S PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, Douglas and Broughton Sts., Victoria, BC on Friday, February 27, 2004 at 11:00 a.m.

Refreshments will follow.

Verna’s wishes are to be cremated followed by committal at sea to join Bert and Keith near Trial Island. Our family welcomes you to sit and enjoy the memorial bench in memory of Verna, Bert and Keith on the east walkway of Clover Point.

LAPOINTE, Elizabeth Mary passed away on February 17, 2004 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. Elizabeth is lovingly remembered by her husband, Roland; two brothers, David (Anna) Peters and John Peters; sister, Helen (Nin) Dougall; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth was born on November 3, 1934 in Morden, Manitoba. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and the Royal Canadian Legion Britannia Branch #7.

A visitation for family and friends will be held at McCALL BROS. CHAPELS, Johnson and Vancouver Streets on Sunday, February 22, 2004 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
