VICKERY – Patricia May (Bird) passed away suddenly on
October 21, 2002. She was born in Calgary, AB on
September 5, 1936. Pat was predeceased by her brother,
Robert in 1986; by her son, Douglas in 1987; and her
husband, Robert in 1990. She is survived by her sons,
David (Kaori), Rob (Carron), and Stephen “Patrick”;
her siblings, Don Bird (Margaret), Alan Bird and Anne
Bibeau (Armond); father-in-law, Cliff; brother-in-law,
Raymond (Anne); sister-in-law, Rose Bird; many nieces
and nephews and many loving friends.
She gave tirelessly to her community through her
service to Rotary International as both Rotary Member,
RotaryAnn President and Director of Silver Threads
Seniors Centre. Her roots started in Beta Sigma Phi
and ended with the loving people of St. Mary’s. She
gave warmth and kindness to all who greeted her.

BISAL, Margaret Purves (nee McMunagle) passed away on October 19th, 2002 at Victoria General Hospital. Margaret will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her husband of 41 years, Marvin; her children, Anne (Jason Jones), Sara (Hazen Bezanson), David (Jo-lee); her grandchildren, Payne Jones and Margaret Anne Bezanson; her brother and sister-in-law, William and Anne McMunagle, her nephew, John McMunagle and family of Ottawa, cousin, Ian Murdoch and family of Edinburgh, Scotland. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Margaret came to Canada in 1951. She trained as a nurse at Ottawa Civic Hospital before marrying Marvin in 1961. She enjoyed travelling with Marvin and the various cities they were posted to during his career. She had particularly very fond memories of their time in Dar-es-salaam, Tanzania. After settling in Victoria, resuming her career she became very active in the BC Nurses Union. Recently retired she was looking forward to spending time with her young grandchildren. A voracious reader, talented cook, devoted wife and mother, Margaret’s passion was her family who will miss her deeply.

A Memorial Service will be held at McCall Bros. Floral Chapel, 1400 Vancouver St., Victoria, BC at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 29th, 2002. Reception to follow at the Union Club of BC, 805 Gordon Street, Victoria, BC.

Graham, Alvina Lidia (nee Aschacher), passed away on October 15, 2002 surrounded by her family, after a courageous battle with cancer.

SHANKLAND, William – Unexpectedly at home on October 13, 2002. Predeceased by his brother, Dave, he is survived by his loving wife of over 50 years, Hilda; nephews, Christopher (Nancy and son, Jordan) and Lawrence (Paula); as well as many good friends.
He was a member of the 407 (Demons) Pathfinder Squadron during WWII serving in Europe and Africa. After the war, Bill worked for over 40 years as an air traffic controller in Manitoba, Ontario and BC. He enjoyed his regular monthly meetings with his fellow veterans of the 407 Squadron.
Private cremation will be held.

KATHLEEN JEANETTE “KAY” CARTER
Carter, Kathleen Jeanette “Kay” passed away on October 8, 2002. A native daughter, born in 1914, she leaves her son, Dennis (Barbara); daughter, Carol (Alex); granddaughters, Therese (Logan) and Jocelyn (Chris); great grandchildren, Paige, Leah, Kennedy and Oscar; also sisters, Florence and Ethel; brother, Herbert; as well as nieces, nephews and many friends.
The family wishes to thank the nursing and care-aide staff at Douglas Care Community and to acknowledge the love and support given by Kay’s longtime friend, Joyce Underwood.
To remember Kay and celebrate her life, there will be a memorial service held at Cordova Bay United Church, 813 Claremont Rd., on Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. The Reverend Larry Scott officiating. Flowers are gratefully declined. Anyone so wishing may donate to the Alzheimer Society of BC.
